SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah women's track and field team gears up to compete at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Washington, Friday, Jan. 29-30. The Utah distance runners will get the action underway on Friday beginning at 6:20 p.m. PT at the Dempsey Indoor Track with the 5,000 meter run, with races continuing on Saturday.
"We will take primarily our distance runners," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler stated. "We will take a few middle distance kids as well, but the sprints, jumps and hurdles kids will have the weekend off to train and hopefully get a little bit healthier. We will run a variety of races. Some of the kids will be running their primary events and a few kids probably won't be. For several of these distance kids, this meet will be their opening opportunity to compete."
"We wanted to wait a little bit longer to compete the distance runners because of the success we had in cross country," Kepler continued. "Qualifying for the NCAA meet gave them a little bit less time to train over Christmas break. I feel like they are in pretty good shape now. I'm excited for them to race and get an idea of where they are really at. We will try to get everybody a couple of races this weekend and give them a chance to round into form before we start the bigger meets in February."
Coming off arguably the best cross country season in program history, this group enters this season with high expectations. At the helm of this group will be the sophomore tandem of Sarah Feeny and Hannah McInturff, who played a key role in leading Utah to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships as a team for the first time in school history. Last indoor season, Feeny recorded the third-fastest 3,000-meter time in Utah history (9:24.54) at the MPSF Championships to place tenth. McInturff currently ranks fourth all-time at Utah in the indoor mile with a time of 11:38.75.
The Dempsey indoor facility is a 307-meter Mondo track with a six lane straightaway, and a five-lane oval.
