FAST BREAKS
> Utah (9-3, 0-0) opens 2016-17 Pac-12 play this weekend, hosting the Colorado Buffaloes (10-3, 0-0) this Sunday, Jan. 1, in New Year's Day action.
> The Utes are 1-4 in Pac-12 openers since becoming a member of the league in 2011-12. Utah's lone win was a conference-opening victory over USC in 2014-15.
> The Utes and Buffs open Pac-12 play against each other for just the second time since both schools became members of the Pac-12. CU won the first meeting in Boulder back on Dec. 31, 2011.
> Colorado leads the all-time series 26-19, but the Utes have won five straight and six of the past eight games dating back to the 2012-13 campaign.
> Utah is 13-8 all-time when facing the Buffs in Salt Lake City, which includes a 4-1 mark in Pac-12 play.
> The Utes continue to rank among the nation's top-20 teams in four different categories, including: rebound margin (7th, +10.9), defensive rebounds per game (9th, 30.3), field goal percentage (14th, 50.2) and total rebounds per game (18th, 41.4).

David Collette has made an immediate impact for the Utes since joining the line-up four games ago. He leads the team with a 15.8 points per game average.
THE GAME
The Utah Runnin' Utes (9-3, 0-0 Pac-12) opens Pac-12 play this weekend, hosting the Colorado Buffaloes (10-3, 0-0 Pac-12) in New Year's Day action this Sunday, Jan. 1. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. MST at the Huntsman Center.

Sunday's contest will be televised live on the ESPNU. Steve Quis will call the action, while Adrian Branch provides color commentary for the game.

DIAMOND HEAD CLASSIC NOTES
• The Utes went 2-1 and claimed fifth-place in the 2016 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic this past weekend.
• Utah dropped the opener, 89-86, to San Francisco, but rebounded with wins over Hawaii (66-52) and Stephen F. Austin (74-66).
• Junior
David Collette led the Utes over the three games with 17.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He tallied a team-best .710 field goal percentage and four blocked shots on the way to being named to the All-Tournament Team.
• Sophomore
Sedrick Barefield scored 35 points in the opening game of the tournament, which ranks as the third-most points scored in a single game at the Diamond Head Classic.
• Senior
Lorenzo Bonam averaged 11.0 points per game at the DHC, while leading the Utes at the free throw line, connecting on 18-of-21 (.857) of his shots from the charity stripe.
• The Utes shot .524 as a team, while giving up just a .438 field goal percentage to its three opponents.
• Utah moved to 2-4 all-time in games played at the DHC.
ABOUT COLORADO
• The Buffs went 10-3 in non-conference play and are on a current three-game winning streak heading into Pac-12 play.
• CU closed out non-conference play with a 76-68 home win over Eastern Washington back on Dec. 22.
• The Buffs registered a 2-1 record away from Coors Events Center during non-conference play. CU tallied road wins against Portland and Air Force, but fell to BYU.
• CU heads into the week ranked No. 27 in the nation and third in the Pac-12 with a .383 field goal percentage-defense.
• The Buffs lead the league and rank 23rd in the nation having attempted 336 free throw attempts. Their 235 free throws made also ranks first in the Pac-12 and No. 27 overall in the nation.
• Josh Fortune leads the Pac-12 and ranks 31st in the nation with a .897 (35-of-39) free throw percentage.
• Derrick White leads CU with 15.0 points per game and Xavier Johnson is right behind him with a 14.5 points per game average.
• White also leads the team in field goal percentage (.520), assists (49) and steals (13).
• Wesley Gordon leads CU with 8.5 rebounds per game and George Kings follows averaging 7.2 boards per contest. Gordon also has a team-high 23 blocked shots on the season.
SERIES HISTORY
Colorado leads the all-time series 26-19, but Utah has won five straight and six of the past eight meetings dating back to the 2012-13 season. Utah is 6-5 overall against the Buffs since both teams joined the Pac-12 in 2011.
CU's last win over the Utes was a 79-75 overtime victory in Boulder back on Feb. 1, 2014. The Buffs have dropped four straight to Utah in Salt Lake City with its last win at the Huntsman Center coming back on Feb. 18, 2012. Utah is 13-8 all-time when facing the Buffs at home.
Utah won the season series last season, but both games were decided by just two points. The Utes downed CU 56-54 in Boulder back on Jan. 8, then picked up a 57-55 home win over the Buffs on March 5.
BAREFIELD GOES OFF FOR 35 POINTS
Sophomore
Sedrick Barefield was playing in just his second game with the Utes, but the SMU transfer made the most of joining the team at the end of the semester with a 35-point performance against San Francisco in the opening round of the Diamond Head Classic.
Barefield went 11-of-15 from the field (5-of-7 from three-point range) and was 8-of-9 from the charity stripe on the way to registering the 30-point effort.
Barefield became the first Ute to score at least 35 points in a game since Keith Van Horn poured in 40 points against TCU back on Feb. 15, 1997.
His 35-point game is tied for second highest among individual players in the league this season. Barefield is tied with Washington's Markelle Fultz, while only California's Charlie Moore has more points (38) in a single game this season.
COLLETTE MAKING AN IMPACT
Junior
David Collette, too, did not play in his first game with the Utes until the fall semester was officially over, but in his first four games donning the Red and White, the Utah State transfer has made an immediate impact for the team.
Collette scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds in his season debut against Prairie View A&M back on Dec. 17, then followed with a 17.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game average at the Diamond Head Classic.
Collete led the Utes in scoring in two of the team's three games and his nine rebounds were a team high in a win over Hawaii. The Murray, Utah, native would go on to earn Diamond Head Classic All-Tournament honors after shooting better than 71 percent from the field and collecting four blocked shots in the event.
Collette heads into the week leading the Utes with a 15.8 points per game average.
CLEANING THE GLASS
Utah heads into conference play leading the league and seventh in the nation with a +10.9 rebound margin. The Utes have tallied 41.4 rebounds per game, while giving up just 30.5 boards to opposing squads.
Utah ranks No. 18 overall in the nation, while leading the Pac-12, with its 41.4 boards per game as a team.
Despite junior
Kyle Kuzma not playing the last two contests, he still ranks third in the Pac-12 with 10.2 rebounds per game. Junior
Tyler Rawson ranks 19th in the league with 5.8 boards per night.
DANIELS AND BONAM AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS
Freshman
Devon Daniels leads the team and ranks third in the Pac-12 with a .608 field goal percentage on the season, while senior
Lorenzo Bonam ranks second on the squad and fifth in the league with a .582 shooting percentage.
ZAMORA CONVERTING AT FREE THROW LINE
Junior
JoJo Zamora has converted nearly 84 percent of his free throw attempts on the season, which ranks first on the team and No. 5 overall in the Pac-12. Zamora is 26-of-31 from the charity stripe this season.
UTAH IN PAC-12 PLAy
Utah heads into conference play with an overall record of 43-47 since joining the Pac-12 in 2011-12. The Utes finished second in the league last season with a 13-5 record.
Utah went 13-5 in 2014-15 and were 9-9 back in 2013-14.
UP NEXT
The Utes hit the road next week for a pair of Pac-12 contests in the desert, taking on both Arizona schools. Utah will face Arizona next Thursday, Jan. 5, at the McKale center and will conclude the weekend with a match-up against Arizona State on Saturday, Jan. 7.
