SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah track and field team prepares to compete at two separate meets this weekend, highlighted by the women's distance runners heading to Seattle, Washington to compete at the Husky Classic. The meet is slated to begin this Friday at 4 p.m. PT at the Dempsey Indoor Track with the women's 200-meter dash. Meanwhile, the Utah sprinters, jumpers and a few middle distance runners will compete at the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
"This is a huge weekend as we go into the last true regular season meets before we head to the MPSF meet," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "The sprinters, jumpers and a handful of middle distance kids will be at the Don Kirby Elite. Coach Herber will have them down there competing on the bank 200-meter track trying to take advantage of the great jump runways and the fast track for the sprinters. The rest of the middle distance and distance squad will be competing at the Husky Classic back up in Seattle. It is probably one of the best meets in the entire country, other than the national meet. Year-in and year-out, it is just a terrific meet with a ton of big performances."
Leading the distance group in Seattle will be sophomore Sarah Feeny, who recorded a time of 4:38.57 in the mile the last time she stepped on the Dempsey Indoor Track a couple of weeks ago. This time currently ranks 12th in the nation and third in the MPSF.
Junior Alissa Atisme will lead the sprints group in New Mexico. Atisme captured the 400-meter event title just a week ago at the Jacksons Invitational with a personal-best time of 55.74 seconds. This time currently ranks 12th in the MPSF.
The jumping events will feature the freshmen trio of Eliza Hansen, Morganne Jones and Lauren McCluskey, who made their first collegiate splash last week at the Jacksons Invitational. Hansen and Jones lead the Utes in the high jump, tying with sixth-place performances after clearing a height of 5 feet, 3.25 inches. McCluskey captured ninth in the event with a jump measuring 5 feet, 1.25 inches.
