SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball slugged its way to a pair of wins over Southern Utah today, 12-4 and 11-1. Seven Utes drove in runs as the team batted .383 in the sweep.
Kristen Stewart went 5-for-7 with three runs and four runs batted in over the two games. Anissa Urtez hit .500 and scored five runs while Heather Bowen drove in five runs. Hannah Flippen was perfect at the plate, walked three times and scored four runs.
Game One - Utah 12, Southern Utah 4 (5 inn.)
Utah struck first when Hannah Flippen doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. The second baseman came home on an Anissa Urtez single to put the Utes ahead 1-0.
Southern Utah would not go quietly though as tied the game with a RBI single and eventually grabbed the lead with a two-run triple from pitcher Jordan Theurer.
The Utes responded in the third, starting with Delilah Pacheco doubling down the left-field line. Flippen hit a ball to second with the SUU fielder making a diving stab. Alter base running would see Pacheco come around to cut the deficit to one.
An Urtez single and Heather Bowen walk loaded the bases for Maddie Roth. The freshman hit a pitch back to the mound and SUU got the force at home. Fortunately, for the Utes, the Thunderbird catcher threw the ball away trying to get Roth, allowing two runs to score.
Trailing by a run, SUU would even the score once more, this time off reliever Hailey Hilburn. A two-out single tied the game, 4-4. Hilburn would eventually get the win, improving to 5-1.
Utah exploded in its half of the fourth for seven runs. Shelby Pacheco, Kay Kay Fronda and Delilah Pacheco walked to load the bases for Kristen Stewart. The senior came through with a two-run double down the left-field line to push the Utes back in front.
After a Flippen walk, Urtez hit a ball that was misplayed by the right fielder that allowed two more runs to score. Bowen then lifted a deep fly ball to center that was caught, but not only would Urtez score, but Flippen came all the way around from second for a 10-4 edge.
With two outs, Ally Dickman tripled to left and would then score when Shelby Pacheco's grounder to first was booted.
The Utes would close the visitors out in the fifth as Delilah Pacheco reached again via an error and moved to second. Stewart smacked one back up the box for a walk-off single.
Game Two - Utah 11, Southern Utah 1 (5 inn.)
A walk and a double gave SUU an early lead but that would be the only positive for the Thunderbirds in game two.
A fielding error allowed Delilah Pacheco to reach and both Kristen Stewart and Hannah Flippen reached on infield singles. With the bases loaded, some sloppy play aided the Utes. A wild pitch tied the score and a throwing error by the pitcher plated two more for a 3-1 lead.
Utah blew the game open in the third with five more runs, putting SUU on the brink. Stewart singled, Flippen walked, and Anissa Urtez reached on a bunt to load them up for Heather Bowen.
Another walk brought the first run in and Ally Dickman would then come through with a two-run single. Bridget Castro then also knocked a two-run single for an 8-1 advantage
The Utes tacked on three more in the fourth thanks to a Bowen two-run triple and a RBI groundout from Bella Secaira.
Katie Donovan got the win, striking out five Thunderbirds in three innings. Sammy Cordova entered in relief and struck out a season-high four batters in two innings.
Utah opens Pac-12 play on Saturday with No. 24 Oregon State at 1 p.m. MT. The Utes will also play the Beavers at 1 p.m. on Sunday and noon on Monday.
