SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball received key contributions from three freshmen and Katie Donovan battled to earn her 10th victory of the season as the Utes took their Pac-12 opener over No. 24 Oregon State, 7-5.
The big hits came from a pair of freshmen as Hailey Hilburn pushed Utah in front with her first collegiate home run, a pinch-hit, three-run shot.
Fellow newcomer Ally Dickman connected on a two-run double to provide the deciding runs after classmate Maddie Roth was plunked with the bases loaded.
Donovan threw a complete game, her eighth of the season in 15 starts. Despite walking five and allowing three home runs, she did strike out a career-high nine batters.
It was a rocky start for Utah's sophomore hurler as she allowed a three-run homer to Natalie Hampton to start the game and put her team in a hole.
Donovan got out of a pair of jams in the third and fourth innings to keep the Utes within striking distance at 3-0
Utah got its first hit of the game when Anissa Urtez singled to lead off the fourth. After a groundout, Kristen Stewart put the home side on the board with a RBI single.
With two outs, an error on an attempted force play kept the inning alive for Hilburn and the freshman unloaded a three-run shot to put Utah in front, 4-3.
OSU answered in the fifth when Christie Langlois connected immediately off Donovan for her third homer of the season to tie the score, 4-4.
Utah started its fifth inning with Delilah Pacheco singling to left. After a sacrifice by Hannah Flippen, Urtez singled again for her team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the season. After a walk to Bowen loaded the bases, OSU got an out to set up a dramatic at-bat.
Fortunately for the Utes, the result was positive and anti-climactic as Maddie Roth got plunked, plating the lead run and making the score, 5-4. Dickman followed with her clutch knock, a two-run double, to push the lead to three.
The Utes would need it as Hampton smashed a second bomb, her 10th of the season, off Donovan in the sixth to pull OSU within two.
A Flippen triple in the bottom of the sixth went unrewarded and Utah took a 7-5 advantage to the seventh. With the tying run on base, Donovan got a "K' and groundout to preserve the win.
The Utes and Beavers are back in action at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the second game of a three-game series.
