SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball blasted three homers and set a season-high for runs scored in a 14-6 victory over No. 24 Oregon State. Sophomore first baseman Heather Bowen knocked in a career-high seven to pace the Utes.
Utah's 1-4 hitters in the lineup went a combined 11-for-16 with 11 runs scored and 10 driven in. Over the last four games, the Utes are averaging 11 runs per contest.
Miranda Viramontes improved to 5-2 with her third complete game of the season. The sophomore pitched the entire game for the Utes, allowed four earned runs on 12 hits, while striking out four batters.
The Utah bats were hot from the first pitch as the Utes jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Hannah Flippen got things going for the Utes with a solo home run to center field. It was the junior's team-leading sixth of the season.
Anissa Urtez and Bowen connected on consecutive doubles to plate another run and later in the inning, Ally Dickman homered to right field, her second blast of the season.
After OSU got a run back in the second, Utah responded with one of its own. Delilah Pacheco scored on a Bowen ground out after leading off the inning with a single.
Trailing 5-1, the Beavers got back into the game off Viramontes in the third. Three of the first four batters reached and two runs came across to score. After an error that would have ended the inning, OSU picked up a two-run single to tie the score
In the fourth, consecutive singles and a walk loaded the bases for Bowen, who then cracked a grand slam. It was Utah's third one of the season and more importantly, put the team back in front, 9-5.
The Beavers tacked on another run in the fifth and just like earlier in the contest, Utah was able to get it back in its half of the inning. Urtez singles to score Pacheco and make the count, 10-6.
Utah ended things in the sixth, starting with Shelby Pacheco hammering a double off the wall in left. Bella Secaira followed with a RBI single and Urtez added a RBI double.
Another Bowen RBI on a ground out put the Utes one run away and pinch-hitter Sammy Cordova came through with a shot up the middle to seal it. It was Cordova's first at-bat in two years and just the third at-bat of her career.
The Utes are back in action tomorrow against the Beavers. The series finale starts at noon. It will be Field Trip Day as the Utes promote excellence in the classroom by hosting local elementary schools for an enjoyable afternoon in the ballpark.
