Sophomore becomes second Ute to earn the NABC honor.
HOUSTON, Texas -- Utah's Jakob Poeltl has been selected as the 2016 Pete Newell Big Man of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the NABC announced on Thursday. Poeltl will receive his award at the AT&T NABC Guardians of the Game Awards Show on Sunday, April 3, at the Cullen Theater at Wortham Center in Houston.
Poeltl becomes the second player in school history to earn the honor, joining Andrew Bogut, who won the same award in 2005. Poeltl is just the second player in Pac-12 history to garner the accolade (Jason Collins, Stanford, 2001). Other previous winners of the award include, Jahlil Okafor, Duke (2015); Blake Griffin, Oklahoma (2009); and Emeka Okafor, Connecticut (2004).
Poeltl, a consensus second-team All-American honoree, helped lead Utah to 27 wins and a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Vienna, Austria, native led the team in points (620), points per game (17.2), rebounds per game (9.1), field goal percentage (.646) and blocked shots (56). He became the first Utah player to eclipse the 600-point mark since Bogut tallied 715 points back in the 2004-05 campaign.
Poeltl has already received numerous honors during his sophomore campaign, being named the Pac-12 Player of the Year to go along with being named a finalist for the John R. Wooden award, Naismith Trophy and Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year award. He is also a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award.
The Pete Newell Big Man of the Year Award is presented in honor of a coach who led the University of California to the NCAA championship in 1959 and coached the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 1960. He was highly regarded for his work with centers and for many years conducted the Pete Newell Big Man's Camp.
