SALT LAKE CITY- Utah track athletes Sarah Feeny and Andrea Chavez will travel to Portland, Ore. to race at the USA Indoor Championships on March 11-12.
"We are out of the indoor season with one exception, the USA Indoor Championships," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "In Andrea's case, it is her first-ever national event like this. For Sarah, she was second at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in the 1500-meters and third at the Pan America Games this past summer. She is used to this and it is nothing new to her. It is just a move up in distance to 3,000 meters. You never really know what to expect at a championship meet, but the more times you run in these kinds of meets, the more experience you get, and the easier it is. We will find out how they do against the pros."
Feeny just missed qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in both the mile and 3,000. Feeny is coming off a third-place performance in the mile at the MPSF Championships. Earlier this season, she broke a 33-year-old school record in the 3,000 at the Husky Classic after recording a time of 9:13.87. She will compete in the 3,000 at 5:35 PST on Friday, March 11.
Chavez is redshirting the 2015-16 indoor season for the Utes, but competed unattached in the 800-meter run at the Husky Classic, where she posted a time of 2:05.19 to qualify for nationals. The 800 begins at 3:55 p.m. PST on Friday. If Chavez qualifies for the final, it will be held on Saturday, March 12, at 5:24 p.m.
