Utes blanked in first road game of season
MINNEAPOLIS – Utah Soccer suffered its first loss of the year with a 3-0 defeat at Minnesota on Sunday afternoon.
"It was great to play a quality side today that returns a lot of players and has high expectations this season," head coach Rich Manning said. "The lessons we learned will serve us well moving forward. We played some good soccer at times and I liked how we responded after being scored upon."
Utah had the first shot of the game went Paola van der Veen went wide in the sixth minute. July Mathias then made a pair of saves, stopping Josee Stiever and Sydney Squires
Minnesota got on the board in the 26th minute when Stiever scored off a headed ball from Simone Kolander.
The Utes had a couple of chances to close the half when Aleea Gwerder fired high and Max Flom missed wide of the net.
One minute into the second half, Stiever turned supplier, setting up Kolander for a 2-0 Golden Gopher lead.
Trailing by a pair, Natalie Vukic missed wide and Van der Veen forced a save from Minnesota goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs. The Dutch sophomore then found Holly Daugirda off a corner but a Gopher defender blocked the freshman's try.
Stiever capped her outstanding day with her second goal in the 82nd minute off a pass from April Bockin.
Utah did register more corner-kick opportunities than Minnesota, 4-3 and July Mathias made a pair of saves. The home team finished with 13 shots, while the Utes notched eight.
The Utes are now 0-5-0 all-time against Big Ten foes on the road and have been out-scored in those contests, 15-3.
"We've got to keep pushing hard to come together," Manning added. "This week of training will be another chance to get better and we are looking forward to playing at Ute Field again next weekend."
Utah is back in action on Friday when it hosts San Diego at 7:30 p.m.
