Skolmoski scores twice, Rogers adds two assists, Ballstaedt nets
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Soccer sped past San Diego in the second half en route to a 3-0 win on Friday evening at Ute Field. Hailey Skolmoski scored twice, Katie Rogers added a pair of assists, and Ella Ballstaedt notched a goal.
"We put in a fantastic performance against a really good team," head coach Rich Manning said. "We played with great energy and we were also able to apply the things we practiced during the week. This is a good foundation from which we can build on for Sunday."
The Utes dominated from the opening kick, racking up nine shots in the first 45 minutes and keeping the Torero offense in check. July Mathias would go on to register her first shutout as a Ute, keeping USD off the board entirely.
In the 49th minute, Holly Daugirda played a ball up the right side for Skolmoski and the freshman unleashed a laser into the top left corner of the net. It was her second goal of the season and put the Utes in front, 1-0.
Utah continued to press and Paola van der Veen won a penalty in the 61st minute. However, the Ute attempt went awry and the margin remained at one.
Utah added to its lead in the 76th minute when Aleea Gwerder's cross was deflected on by Rogers and fell to the waiting feet of Ballstaedt. The freshman poked home her first goal in a Ute uniform for a 2-0 edge.
In the 87th minute, Utah closed the scoring when Rogers released a long ball up the left side. A speeding Skolmoski was able to get to the ball first and crossed across the goal before slotting home the capper.
The Utes are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Logan for a contest against Utah State.
