SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Runnin' Utes (6-1) picked up an 80-60 home win over the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (4-2) Saturday evening at the Huntsman Center.
Donnie Tillman scored a new season/career high 16 points and
David Collette matched it with 16 points, as well.
Gabe Bealer chipped in with 14 points and
Justin Bibbins added 13 points to give the Utes four players in double figures.
Jayce Johnson came off the bench to score seven points and pull down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Utah took a 37-30 lead into the locker room behind
Justin Bibbins' nine-point effort. He was 3-of-3 from downtown and that proved to be the difference over the first 20 minutes of play as the Utes shot .417 (5-of-7) from beyond the arc and the Rainbow Warriors cashed in on just a .200 (2-of-10) effort.
Hawaii closed the first half outscoring the Utes 8-2 and then opened the second half with a 4-2 run to get within five points, but Utah countered with a 14-4 run to push its lead to 53-39. The Rainbow Warriors would get back within 11 points following a 7-2 run midway through the half, but Utah's defense clamped down and did not allow UH to convert a field goal for over four minutes following the 7:30 mark of the period.
An 8-2 run through the final media timeout would prove to be too much for the Rainbow Warriors and Utah would go onto win its sixth game of the season.
Utah will hit the road next week with a road contest at Butler. Tip-off between the Utes and Bulldogs is set for 9 p.m. ET/7 p.m. MT at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On what the team was able to do to pull away from Hawaii…
It wasn't stellar defense on either team's part. It was missing a bunch of open shots, Hawaii missed open shots, and we missed open shots. In the first half our discussion at halftime was strictly defense, you know playing harder we had to many post touches too many drive by, blow by, off the bounce kind of stuff and you know we started the second half with some deflections and getting some stops and in the transition offense we're a lot better when we can get out and push it but it was an example of hanging our hat on playing some defense and getting our hands on some balls and the offense end opened up for us a little bit and that was key.
On what the four Utes in double figures saw in the second half to open it up…
I mean it's kind of been the nature of our team, Justin knocked down some threes, Gabe knocked some threes and those guys were the line share of our percentage from three we haven't been shooting the ball very well, but there were a lot of open looks that didn't go in so I think from an offensive point of view it's not like we need to recreate the wheel at this point and come up with a bunch of new stuff we just need to get in and as I told the team get in and get a bunch of reps up. We've done a lot of shooting this last week and some guys have to find some confidence because then we could be really good. We are playing the game the right way and we manage to make enough and had a nice thread I thought with some three-point shooting and some inside, still got to clean a few things up but it's kind of the nature of our team I think. We got different guys that step up from time to time and we don't have one guy that we can rely on so it's going to have to be a collective effort on our part.
If he was happy about out-rebounding them by 14 …
Well regardless of size, the first half I wasn't happy they had more offensive rebounds than we did. I felt a lot better about our second half rebounding than I did our first half and forget numbers, they missed a bunch of shots and we got a bunch more rebounds so some of those totals you give credit to your defense for getting them to miss, our defense didn't cause them to miss in the first half, I thought our defense in the second half caused them to miss and then we were able to rebound. We got to rebound collectively, it's one of the easy opportunities that teams get, transition and rebounding and it's been a focal point this week and it needs to continue.
Hawaii Head Coach Eran Ganot
On the team's performance…
That was not a good performance. I thought we did a good job to keep us in the game defensively, but again, there is an occurring thing with our offensive distortion, our inability to make shots around the rim, and we probably had six to ten layups that we either faded or missed. You give yourselves a chance when you hold that team to 44% from the field, you give a chance when you turn it over 10 times after turning it over five times in the first five minutes, but you have to put offense pressure on them.
On Utah's effective big guys…
That is why he's [
Tyler Rawson] a good player and that's what good players do. Offensive nights don't dictate your overall performance and that's what good teams do. The defensive rebounding, the taking care of the ball, there are so many ways to impact the game. We were a little bit too one-dimensional tonight.
On the offensive struggles from Jack Purchase and the team…
He just has to keep playing. I thought he had a good shot he hit late and early he was ready to go. He took some rough ones in the second half and you can't play that way. We don't have the margin of error to have too many guys like that at the same time, so we have to fight through this right now, individually and collectively, because we aren't going to be able to get to where we want to be unless we fix it and get mentally tougher.
