TEMPE, Ariz. - Utah Softball won its first two games of the 2017 season at the Kajikawa Classic this afternoon, blanking UC Riverside, 11-0, and topping San Jose State, 8-5.
Â
Katie Donovan earned the win in the first game and then entered late to pick up a save in the second for
Miranda Viramontes. Offensively,
Anissa Urtez paced the team with four hits in six at-bats.
Â
The Utah shortstop also scored three runs, tops on the team along with senior first baseman
Bridget Castro.
Hannah Flippen and
Heather Bowen each drove in four as the Utes coasted to a 2-0 start.
Â
Utah 11, UCR 0
The Utes started perfectly, scoring eight runs in the first and putting the game out of reach. Flippen got plunked and
Kay Kay Fronda walked before Urtez singled home the first run of the game. Bowen cleared the bases with a three-run homer to make it 4-0.
Â
The inning continued for the Utes as Castro singled and
Kelly Martinez reached on an error. After a
Alyssa Barrera knock, Flippen legged out an infield chopper to plate another run. A bases-loaded walk to Fronda followed and Urtez laced a two-run single for an 8-0 edge.
Â
Utah added another run in the second when Castro reached via a fielder's choice; a pitch hit Barrera and
Hailey Hilburn walked. Another bases-loaded walk, this time to Flippen, put another notch on the board.
Â
The scoring closed in the third with the Utes adding a pair. Urtez walked, Bowen singled and
Sammy Cordova walked to load the bases. Castro and Martinez followed with fielder's choices to cap it off, 11-0
Â
Donovan got the win, allowing one hit and striking out four batters in three innings. Hilburn switched to the circle and pitched two no-hit innings of relief.

The Utes struck early and never relinquished the lead, earning the victory over the Spartans.
Â
During the second inning,
Ally Dickman doubled, Castro singled and Barrera lifted a sacrifice fly to center. After a walk to Martinez,
Delilah Pacheco singled and Fronda followed with another sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. A Flippen doubled plated two more and doubled the advantage.
Â
Alyssa Avila answered for SJSU with a two-run single in the second to halve the deficit. However, Utah responded in the third. Dickman drew a one-out single and Castro walked before Barrera singled to center for a 5-2 edge. Martinez grounded to short but it was enough to score another run.
Â
After the Spartans pulled back to within two runs on a Cassidy Clark double, Utah added single scores in the fourth and sixth innings. Bowen scored Fronda with a sac fly to center and Castro singled through the left side of the infield to plate Urtez.
Â
SJSU closed the scoring on a Kristen Heffley double and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth before falling short.
