EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman
Jayce Johnson registered his first career double-double with a team-high 14 points and 12 rebounds, but the Utah Runnin' Utes (17-9, 8-6) were handed a road loss to the No. 7-ranked Oregon Ducks (23-4, 12-2) Thursday evening at Matthew Knight Arena.
Johnson set a new season/career-high with his 14-point effort, which came on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. His 12 boards were a game-high and the Santa Monica, Calif., native also registered one of Utah's three blocked shots on the night.
Junior
David Collette added 12 points, while sophomore
Sedrick Barefield and freshman
Devon Daniels totaled seven points each. Senior
Lorenzo Bonam led the Utes defensively with a pair of blocks and three steals.
Oregon took a 41-25 lead into halftime after shooting .581 (18-of-31) from the field and limiting the Utes to just a .375 (12-of-32) effort.
Utah was down 21-12 following a jumper from junior
David Collette midway through the first half, but the Ducks used a 16-4 to push its lead to 37-16 with 3:17 left in the period. Johnson reeled off six straight points for the Utes and Utah managed to close out the final three-plus minutes with a 9-4 run.
Oregon opened the second half with an 11-5 run to increase its lead to 20 points, up 52-32. Utah would trade buckets with the home team throughout the majority of the second half and were outscored by just two points the rest of the way.
The Utes fell to 8-6 in conference play with the defeat, but head coach
Larry Krystkowiak was encouraged by what he saw from his team.
"I was really proud of our guys' effort tonight," said Krystkowiak. "We got beat by the better team, but there is a reason why they are seventh in the country and I am not sure they are not even better than that. [Oregon head coach] Dana Altman has done a heck of a job with that team and there is not a lot of margin for error when you come into this building."
Utah finished the contest shooting .382 (25-of-68) field, while Oregon tallied a .534 (31-of-58) shooting percentage on the night. The Ducks shot less than 37 percent from beyond the arc, but did manage to make seven three-pointers compared to Utah's three trey's in the game.
Utah lost the rebounding advantage, 38-31 overall, but the Utes totaled 14 offensive rebounds, which turned into 19 second-chance points.
