No. 20 Utah Softball opens Pac-12 play at No. 10 UCLA. The Utes, who have played every game away from home, spend their sixth-straight weekend on the road.
UTAH NOTES
- Utah stayed at No. 20 in the latest ESPN/USA Softball rankings and No. 21 in the NFCA/USA Today rankings.
- Utah was pegged at No. 15 earlier in the season, it's highest ranking in program history.Â
- Utah ranks among the top 25 in the nation in a handful of offensive categories including 13th in batting average (.343), 18th in scoring (6.64 runs per game) and 23rd in on-base percentage (.419).
- Hannah Flippen recently surpassed the 200-hit and 100-RBI plateaus for her career. She is three runs shy of setting the Utah career mark for runs scored set by Sandy Rhea (1995-98).
- Flippen currently ranks third in slugging percentage (.821) as well as sixth in doubles and seventh in on-base percentage (.538) and runs scored among Pac-12 players. She also sits eighth in batting average (.463).
- Anissa Urtez had a big weekend and surpassed 200 hits for her career. She moved up to fourth in batting among Pac-12 players with a .485 average, 27th nationally
- She also ranks 12th in the league in on-base percentage and 14th in runs driven in. With 39 doubles, she is two shy of moving into the top-five all-time at Utah
 - Heather Bowen is also heating up with a team-high 25 runs batted in, fourth-most in the Pac-12. The junior notched the 100th hit of her career last weekend.
- Utah currently ranks fifth in the nation with a combined team ERA of 1.02
- Katie Donovan is fourth in the Pac-12 with 10 wins and ranks fifth in strikeouts. She recently surpassed 300 K's for her career.Â
- Miranda Viramontes threw a perfect game vs. CSU Bakersfield, Utah's first in a decade. She is undefeated and ranks 21st in the nation with a 0.80 ERA. Last weekend, she also notched the 200th strikeout of her career.
- Hailey Hilburn also remains perfect on the season and is seventh in the nation with a 0.57 ERA.
- Defensively, Utah leads the league in double plays turned, 24th in the nation. This comes after ranking second in the nation last season.
- The Utes have also shown a penchant for stealing bases, swiping an average of 1.3 per contest and placing them third among Pac-12 teams
LAST WEEK
Utah went 5-0 at the Outrigger Spring Fling Tournament hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Utes scored 42 runs and held their opposition to just five.
Anissa Urtez batted ,733 with her first homer of the season, four runs scored and eight driven in. Hannah Flippen drove in 10 runs and batted .500, scoring six times and homering twice.
Kay Kay Fronda, despite starting just two games, scored seven times to pace the Utes.Â
In the circle, Katie Donovan seemed to regain her dominant form, going 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA. Hailey Hilburn remained undefeated and Miranda Viramontes returned to the rotation and won the finale.
BARRERA NAMED PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Utah outfielder Alyssa Barrera was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Feb. 28 for her performances on the field at the Mary Nutter Classic.
The Chino Hills, California native led the team with four runs scored, a .438 batting average and also slugged .563. She reached base safely in her first 13 games and opened her collegiate career with an 11-game hit streak.
She currently ranks sixth in the Pac-12 and leads the Utes with 24 runs scored and along with Ally Dickman, is one of the five most difficult players in the conference to strikeout.
FLIPPEN PEGGED AS SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE
Hannah Flippen was named as a candidate for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball. Thirty of the top NCAA softball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected earlier this season.
For her career, Flippen owns the highest batting average of any Ute ever at .386 (Cyndee Bennett, .371, 1994-97).Â
Last season, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named Flippen an All-American. The Ute second baseman was also named the 2016 Pac-12 Player of the Year and tabbed as an Academic All-America First Team selection by CoSIDA.
Prior to the start of this season, Flippen was named to the USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List and also earned a spot on the US National Team.
