SALT LAKE CITY – Sophomore
Sedrick Barefield scored 14 points off the bench to help lead the Utah Runnin' Utes (19-10, 10-7) to a 30-point blowout victory over the California Golden Bears (19-10, 10-7) Thursday night at the Huntsman Center.
Â
Barefield registered his first double-digit scoring effort since pouring in 10 points at Washington State back on Jan. 18. It was the Corona, Calif., native's sixth time to score in double figures this season.
Â
"He's certainly a dynamic guard," said Utah head coach
Larry Krystkowiak. "Just at times, some of the passes and plays get a little bit sloppy, but that's part of being a young kid in a program. I know he'll look at the film, he'll want to see himself."
Â
After trading buckets back-and-forth to start the game, Barefield opened a 10-0 run with the first of his two three-pointers on the night, which gave Utah a 24-11 advantage. Cal's Jabari Bird converted an old-fashioned three-point play at the 7:16 mark with a field goal and a free throw attempt. That would prov to be the Bears' last field goal until the 1:01 mark, but by that time the Utes had pushed its lead to 42-18.
Â
Cal would go 0-for-3 from the field and registered five turnovers in a scoring drought that lasted 6:15 before Grant Mullins knocked down a jumper with 1:01 left to play in the first half.
Â
"We've gotten better defensively," said Krystkowiak. "Tonight, it seemed like when they scored, it hurt. We've taken a little bit of pride in making some stops and we had a lot of contested shots that forced them to miss."
Â
Utah kept both the scoring pace and defensive play up to begin the second half, out-scoring the Bears 9-3 over the first seven-plus minutes of the period. The Utes were up 51-25 before Cal drained its first field goal of the second half.
Â
Cal's top-two scorers, Jabari Bird (14.7 ppg) and Ivan Rabb (14.6 ppg) combined to score just 14 points on the night. Rabb was 0-of-3 from the field and all eight of his points came at the charity stripe, while Bird finished with six points.
Â
"We had a double team plan on Rabb, and last time we played Bird it was a career high," said Krystkowiak. "[We] made things difficult for him, so I think our guys freed up their mind a little bit, that we were going to lock in and play man and challenged them. It was as good a defense as we've played this well for sure."
Â
Cal finished the game posting season-lows in field goal percentage (23.1), 3-point percentage (11.1), assists (three), field goals made (12) and points (44).
Â
The 30-point victory was Utah's largest margin of defeat in the all-time series, while the 44 points given up were just the fourth-lowest outcome for a Cal team when facing Utah.
Â
Junior's
David Collette (12) and
Kyle Kuzma (12) poured in double-digit scoring efforts, as did senior
Lorenzo Bonam (11). Bonam led the team defensively with seven rebounds and registering a career-high four steals.
