No. 16 Utah Softball Finishes Play at Red Desert Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah - No. 16 Utah Softball closed the Red Desert Classic by winning its opener, 7-2, over Binghamton, but falling in its second game, 5-1, to Omaha.

Hannah Flippen's two-run homer set the tone and Hailey Hilburn threw her first complete game as the Utes got off on the right foot this morning against Binghamton.
A day after throwing a career-high 6 1/3 innings vs. Nevada, Hilburn responded with seven innings vs. the Bearcats, allowing just on earned run in the process.
She received an early offensive boost when Flippen hit a two-run homer in the first for an early Utah lead. It was the senior's third of the season and 26th for her career.
In the third, Delilah Pacheco hit one back to the mound and the Binghamton pitcher threw the ball away, allowing Kelly Martinez to come home another run.
Stephanie Bielec got BU on the board with a RBI single in the third and a Flippen error plated Jessica Rutherford to make a 3-2 contest.
The Utes added to their lead in the fourth as Bella Secaira singled to the right-center gap and scored pinch-runner Ryley Ball. The lead doubled in the fifth as Anissa Urtez singled home Alyssa Barrera and on an attempted double steal, Urtez scampered hoe for a 6-2 edge.
Pacheco added another run in the sixth, driving home Maddie Roth with a single to center.
Omaha 5 Utah 1
The Mavericks jumped on the Utes early with Vicky Kinney lacing a two-run double off Katie Donovan and Emily Kolsterman following with a another two-bagger for a 3-0 lead.
The Omaha offense continued to slug away with Lia Mancuso and Nicole Warren slicing consecutive RBI singles for a 5-0 lead to end Donovan's day.
Utah was held in check until the fourth when Flippen smashed a RBI double to get it on the board. The Utes could only manage three hits off Omaha's Laura Roecker while Hilburn entered in relief and shut out the Mavericks over the final 4 1/3 innings.
Utah is back in action next week at the Outrigger Spring Fling at the University of Hawaii. The Utes play five games against Toledo, Charleston Southern and the Rainbow Wahine.
