SALT LAKE CITY – No. 13 Utah suffered a stinging loss in its opener with No. 8 Washington this evening, 12-1
Â
The Huskies got things going immediately when Sis Bates singled and Casey Stangel walked. After a grounder to short, Taylor Van Zee smoked a ball back to the circle that caught
Katie Donovan and scored the game's first run. Julie DePonte followed with a single to left and the relay throw home was not in time, giving UW a 2-0 lead.
Â
In the bottom half of the frame,
Hannah Flippen reached via a fielder's choice and after stealing second, she scored on anÂ
Anissa Urtez single to right, halving the deficit
Â
In the second, Kelly Burdick bunted her way on, stole second and after a Ali Aguilar single moved her to third, the No. 9 hitter came home on a passed ball.
Â
After a pair of walks, Morganne Flores cleared the bases with a double. She would score on defensive indifference as Utah cut down a would-be base stealer at second.
Â
Kirstyn Thomas smashed the third pitch of the third inning to center for her seventh homer of the season and the Huskies added four more in the fourth.
Â
Van Zee smacked her sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot, Ali Aguilar slapped a single to right and a Utah error tacked on another to make it 12-1
Â
Donovan (15-9) suffered the loss as she surpassed 100 pitches in a game for the seventh time this season.
Hailey Hilburn recorded the final four outs in relief. On the other side, Taran Alvelo improved to 26-6 for UW.
