SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Softball was successful on day one of the NCAA Regional Tournament with a 10-0 victory over Fordham in five innings.
Â
The first NCAA Tournament game at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in program history could not have gone any better for the Utes. The 10 runs scored were the most ever scored by Utah in a NCAA Tournament game and the margin of victory also set a program standard.
Â
Katie Donovan picked up her 4th win in NCAA play as a member of the Utes and notched her 53
rd career victory, moving her fifth all-time in program history. She allowed one hit in three innings of work before
Hailey Hilburn nailed down the shutout with two solid frames.
Â
As it has done for most of the season, Utah was the aggressor in the contest.
BreOnna Castaneda started with a single to center and after a Fordham error,
Hannah Flippen slapped a single to left for the game's first run.
Â
Anissa Urtez followed with a shot to left that allowed
Alyssa Barrera to tag and score from third. Following a
Bridget Castro single,
Heather Bowen followed with another hit for a three-run first inning.
Â
A Fordham error allowed a Utah base runner to reach, starting the second and Castaneda followed with a double. Barrera was able to come through with a two-run single during the following at bat.
Â
Flippen alertly laid down a bunt and the squeeze play paid off as Barrera scored from second. After Urtez worked a walk, Bowen hammered her seventh homer of the season for an 8-0 Utah lead.
Â
Delilah Pacheco started things in the third by drawing a free pass and another error put the Utes in business. Barrera added another RBI to her total with a sacrifice fly to right and Flippen followed with another RBI single
Â
Utah will now play BYU tomorrow at 1 p.m. MT with Fordham taking on Mississippi State at approximately 3:30 p.m. MT. The loser from the first game will go against the winner of the second game in a third game tomorrow at approximately 6 p.m.
