SALT LAKE CITY – Jayson Rose set the career strikeout record for Utah baseball as the Utes defeated UC Riverside, 7-3, to open the three-game non-conference series on Thursday evening.
Rose earned his sixth win of the year after throwing 6 2/3 innings, striking out nine and allowing three runs on five hits with one walk. He had one strikeout in both the first and second innings and struck out the side in the third inning to tie then break the record.
Tanner Thomas entered in the seventh and threw 2 1/3 innings, didn't allow a hit and struck out four to pick up his first save of the year.
Every Ute in the lineup had at least one hit with
Hunter Simmons,
Zack Moeller and
Josh Rose all recording two hits.
Josh Rose drove in three runs while
Ellis Kelly drove in two runs on the night.
Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Chandler Anderson reached on an error and
Dominic Foscalina singled to right field. After a sacrifice bunt from
Josh Rose, Kelly flew out to left field for a sacrifice fly.
The Utes exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third after seven hits.
Dallas Carroll led off the inning with a single and after moving to second on a wild pitch, Simmons drove him in with a single. Moeller and Anderson each singled with one out and both scored on
Josh Rose's two-RBI triple into the right field corner. Kelly added an RBI single and
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., hit his team-leading fifth triple of the year for another run, giving Utah a 6-0 lead through three innings.
UC Riverside got on the board in the top of the seventh with three runs on four hits to cut Utah's lead to 6-3.
The Utes got a run back in the bottom of the seventh with Anderson drawing a one-out walk and
Josh Rose hit a double to right center, his second extra-base hit of the game, to give the Utes a 7-3 lead.
Utah and UC Riverside play game two of the series on Friday, May 5, at 6:00 p.m. MT. The game will be aired on the Pac-12 Network and on local radio at ESPN 700 AM.
