SAN FRANCISCO – The University of Utah volleyball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Pac-12 Conference standings, according to the 2017 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches' Poll that was announced by the league office on Wednesday. In addition, senior outside hitter
Adora Anae was named to the 14-member All-Pac-12 Volleyball Preseason Team.
This marks the highest Pac-12 Conference preseason coaches' poll ranking for the Utes in the since becoming a member in 2012. Utah's previous high mark was coming in at No. 8 in last year's preseason poll.
Washington is the preseason favorite to win the conference title, earning eight of 12 total first-place votes for a total of 113 points. Stanford (3) and Utah (1) were the only other teams to earn a first-place vote in the poll. Stanford (113 points) and Oregon (93) rounded out the top-three in the poll. The Utes earned a total of 88 points in the poll.
UCLA (83) came in at No. 5 and USC (71) was picked to finish sixth. Washington State (66), Arizona (51), Colorado (38), Oregon State (33), Cal (23) and Arizona State (15) round out the remainder of teams in the poll.
Anae, a senior out of Punaluu, Hawaii, is coming off a 2016 campaign in which she earned First Team All-Pac-12 accolades, along with AVCA First Team All-Region and Second Team All-American honors. She led the conference with 4.70 kills and 5.22 points per set, while ranking fourth in the league with 0.27 aces per set. She finished the season with a school record 592 kills, while becoming the first player to register back-to-back 500-kill seasons (501, 2015).
Anae is joined on the preseason team with Oregon's Taylor Agost, Ronika Stone and Lindsey Vander Weide; Washington's Crissy Jones, Courtney Schwan and Bailey Tanner; Stanford's Audriana Fitzmorris, Morgan Hentz, Merete Lutz and Kathryn Plummer; UCLA's Reily Buechler; USC's Khalia Lanier; and Oregon State's Mary-Kate Marshall.
The Utes open the 2017 regular season on the road at the Bluegrass Battle in Lexington, Ky., on Aug. Aug. 25-26. Utah will face Cincinnati, Kentucky and Arkansas State in the two-day event.
