Utes earn sixth preseason ranking in program history
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Utah volleyball program will open its 2017 campaign in the national rankings, as the squad came in at No. 23 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Preseason Poll, the AVCA announced today.
The Utes earned an AVCA preseason ranking for the first time since the 2015 season (No. 23) and for the sixth time overall in program history. Utah, who went 20-12 overall and 11-9 in the Pac-12 Conference last season, came in at No. 25 in 2016's final AVCA rankings.
Utah is one of six Pac-12 teams ranked in the preseason poll, which also includes last season's NCAA National Champions Stanford (No. 2), Washington (3), UCLA (13), Oregon (18) and Arizona (24). USC and Washington State both received votes in the poll
Texas received 25 of 43 first-place votes for a total of 1547 points to take the top spot in the poll. Stanford accumulated more first-place votes (35), but tallied a total of 1533 points to come in at No. 2. Washington (2 first-place votes) came in at No. 3 ahead of Minnesota (2 first-place votes), while Nebraska rounded out the top five.
The Utes are scheduled to face 10 top-25 teams this season, which includes facing five ranked squads in non-conference action. Those teams include No. 10-ranked BYU, Kentucky (No. 14), Missouri (No. 19), Hawaii (No. 20) and San Diego (No. 22).
Utah opens the 2017 season in Lexington, Ky., facing three squads in the Bluegrass Battle. The Utes will face Cincinnati, Kentucky and Arkansas State the first weekend of competition.
