SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Soccer earned a second win in a row on Thursday evening, topping Washington 2-0.
Ireland Dunn's early goal was doubled by
Makayla Christensen's stunning strike and
Carly Nelson stood tall in net to preserve a deserving shutout.
"The team showed tremendous heart and competitive spirit tonight," head coach
Rich Manning said. "I am proud of the players for stepping up and dealing with some challenges to put together a winning performance."
Within the first 10 minutes, the Utah defense had already tasted what it was in for this evening. Washington racked up three corners and Nelson made two big stops in a sign of things to come.
Utah capitalized on its first corner when the ball was sent back into the penalty area after an attempted clearance. Dunn held off her defender and Washington's goalkeeper mishandled the ball allowing the junior to take advantage and stab home her third goal of the season.
After Dunn forced a save from UW keeper Siena Ruelas a few minutes later, the Huskies continued to pepper Utah. Sianna Siemonsma hit the post in the 25
th minute and Olivia Van der Jagt followed with a try off the crossbar from a free kick.
The Utes continued to soak up the pressure and when all was said and done after 45 minutes, UW had out-shot the Utes, 13-2 and amassed 10 corner kicks. However, the only numbers that mattered were still 1-0.
"Washington put us under a lot of pressure, especially in the first half," Manning added. "We defended well and Ireland scored an opportunistic goal to give us some early confidence."
Nelson kept doing everything to keep her side ahead, making two more saves to open the second half. She would finish with eight saves, giving her four shutouts on the season and nine in her career.
"We wake up and train and you live for games like this," Nelson stated. "I am so proud of everyone because we have been working so hard on defending corner kicks in practice and it paid off."
"Carly was fantastic tonight in goal," Manning said. "The team in front of her battled all the way."
Meanwhile, Utah created chances on the counter at the other end of the field.
Max Flom sent one off the crossbar right before the hour mark and in the 63
rd minute, the Utes had their second goal.
Lulu Borges cleared a ball from her central defender position down the field and after a few bounces, Christensen unleashed a laser of a shot into the left corner.
"We were only getting a few opportunities tonight so I saw it take a couple bounces and knew I had to be quick with the shot," Christensen added. "I hit it first time to the upper right corner. It was awesome."
"This is a big step for us," Christensen commented. "We have been close and this shows that we are continuing to work hard. We deserved this one tonight."
