Junior's first goal of season give Utah third-straight win
SALT LAKE CITY – Holly Daugirda's game-winning goal in overtime gave Utah Soccer a 1-0 win over No. 7 Washington State on Saturday afternoon.
The junior midfielder could not have scored her first of the season at a better time as she directed a cross from Ireland Dunn for the winner.

"It is all a blur right now," Dunn said. "I know I received the ball just outside the 18 and passed it wide to Ireland. She took it to the end line and gave me the perfect pass. I just had to slot it in. I wanted to get up there and score because we had been passing it around nicely and we needed to convert."
"Holly had a fantastic game and it was fitting that she put away the winning goal," head coach Rich Manning added. ""We were rushing the attack a bit in the second half and we talked at the end of regulation about being more patient and trying to stay wider in the final third. On the goal, Ireland executed it perfectly. She did a great job of getting wide and driving to the end line and then finding Holly."
Utah went after an early goal as Paola van der Veen shot wide in the first minute and Rachel Thompson stopped Kristin Fairbairn. Dunn had a look blocked by a WSU defender and at other end, Carly Nelson made a pair of saves on Makamae Gomera-Stevens and Morgan Weaver.
Utah's best chance before overtime occurred when freshman Anna Escobedo flicked her volley attempt just over the bar in the 71st minute
Utah's backline of Haylee Cacciacarne, Hailey Skolmoski, Hailey Stodden and Lulu Borges were exceptional again, holding the Cougars to just one scoring opportunity in the second period. After a busy Thursday evening, Nelson finished with four saves as the Utes registered a third straight shutout. It was the 10th career blanking for the junior goalkeeper
"The team played with great energy and tremendous heart again today, Manning stated. "They are gaining confidence and I can see their belief getting stronger. The defense was solid the entire match. I thought the back four, with Stodden, Lulu, Cacci, and Tatum Thornton was outstanding and Hailey provided us with some great leadership in the back."
"Beating ASU was so important because it rebuilt our confidence," Daugirda expressed. "We took another step by beating Washington and now we have some more confidence heading into Oregon State next week. We fight, we do not give up and we always play to the final whistle."
