NELSON NAMED PAC-12 GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Carly Nelson has been named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week for her shutout performances against Washington and No. 7 Washington State this past weekend.
Â
Nelson made a season-high nine saves in the win over the Huskies and then recorded her fifth shutout of the season, and 10th of her career, against the nationally ranked Cougars.
Â
Nelson currently ranks atop the Pac-12 with a .903 save percentage and three shutouts in league play. She also ranks second with 57 saves and third with a goals-against average of 0.70.
Â
This is the 14th Pac-12 weekly award for Utah Soccer and second for Nelson.
Â
WEEKEND RECAP
Utah started with a 2-0 win over Washington behind goals from
Ireland Dunn and
Makayla Christensen. The Utes withstood 16 corner kicks to preserve the shutout against the Huskies. Utah then topped No. 7 Washington State on an overtime winner by
Holly Daugirda. The Utes improved to 2-10-5 against top-10 foes since joining the Pac-12 in 2011.
Â
SKOLMOSKI SOARING UP CHARTS
Hailey Skolmoski scored the 11th game-winner of her career in a 1-0 win over Nevada. She moved into fifth place in Utah history with the 26th goal of her career, matching Jacki Doman (1995-96). Skolmoski is currently second on the team with four goals this season.
Â
Skolmoski, the first and only Ute earn First Team All-Pac-12, now needs four goals to catch Shauna Gurr-Bingham (1999-2002) for fourth place in Utah history. The senior striker was named to the MAC Herman Watch List last season and is a NSCAA All-Pacific Region honoree, CoSIDA All-Academic First team selection and US U23 Women's National Team call up.
Â
PO PICKS UP PAIR OF HONORS
Paola van der Veen was an All-Pac-12 performer last season and named All-West Region by the United Soccer Coaches.
Â
A native of The Netherlands, Van der Veen responded to an injury-plagued sophomore season with an outstanding junior year. Van der Veen finished fourth in the conference with eight goals and fifth in the league with 20 points, pacing the Utes in both categories.
Â
This was the second Pac-12 postseason honor for Van der Veen. She earned a spot on the All-Freshman team in 2015 when she paced Utah with six assists, ranking sixth in the Pac-12.
Â
SERIES HISTORY
Utah is 5-4 against the Beavers with a 3-1 mark at Ute Field. Since joining the Pac-12, the Utes have won five of seven in this matchup and every meeting in Salt Lake City. The last game at Ute Field in 2016 saw a 1-0 victory thanks to an early goal by
Hailey Skolmoski.
Â
Prior to last year, the Utes had won four in a row, all by shutout. Utah suffered a 2-1 setback in Corvallis despite the first collegiate goal for
Jessica Hixson. Utah's first win over a ranked Pac-12 foe was in 2011 over the No. 18 Beavers here in SLC.
