SALT LAKE CITY – No. 24 Utah dropped a five-set match in the Huntsman Center to the Cal Bears on Sunday, October 7.
Â
The Utes had some big performances from a couple of freshman in
Megan Yett and
Kennedi Evans. Yett led the team with 14 kills as well as 13 digs and Evans had the second most blocks in school history with 15.
Â
The Utes got off to a slow start in the first, but responded by winning sets two and three emphatically.
Â
With Cal threatening to go up 2-0 leading 23-22 in the second, Utah won three straight points after a block by Evans and
Kenzie Koerber and then Koerber evened the match up with an ace.
Â
Utah came out on fire in the third set and hit .500, had 6.0 blocks and five aces to dominate Cal, 25-9. That's the biggest margin of victory for the Utes in any set this season.
Â
After Cal took an early 7-4 lead, the Utes ran off five straight to go up 9-7. Utah held that lead until late in the set and led by as many as three before Cal grabbed the advantage back 21-20. The two teams traded points to 23 all and then the Bears won back-to-back points to force a fifth set.
Â
In the fifth, Cal went on a 7-0 run to go up 10-4 and the deficit proved to be too much for Utah to overcome. The Utes chipped away and didn't give up, but the Bears closed out the match, 15-10.
Â
Evans 15 blocks is the most ever in a five-set match and second most in program history. The most is 16.0 when Lori Baird did it against BYU in 2008 in a three-set match.
 Â
The team had 21.0 total blocks in the match.
Â
Dani Drews was the other Utah player with double-digit kills finishing the match with 11 and also had 10 digs and six blocks.
Â
This was the seventh five-set match that the Utes have played in this season.
Â
Next week, Utah will be back in the Huntsman Center hosting Oregon State on Thursday, October 11 and No. 20 Oregon on Sunday, October 14 at noon.
