SALT LAKE CITY – Utah volleyball has inked three signees during the national signing period, head coach
Beth Launiere announced.
Â
The Utes signed outside hitter Leah Schmidt, middle blocker Shkhinah Tindsley and outside hitter Zoe Weatherington. The Ute coaching staff used their national brand to recruit from all over the country for this recruiting cycle signing the three players from Ohio, North Carolina and California.
Â
"We're so excited to have these three players from different parts of the country be so interested in Utah and be a part of our 2018 recruiting class," Launiere said. "We believe the success the Utah volleyball program has achieved nationally is attracting players from areas outside of our normal recruiting footprint. Recruits know we have been a traditional top-25 program and they want to play in the PAC-12."
Â
Schmidt was named First Team All-Conference three times and First Team All-District two times over her high school career. The Westlake, Ohio native totaled 1,143 kills, 161 blocks, 659 digs and 143 aces lettering four years at Westlake High School. She was also named offensive MVP for her team three times. Schmidt plans to major in film/media art at Utah. Schmidt played for the Cleveland Volleyball Company for club.
Â
"Leah is a tall, six-rotation outside hitter that is long and plays the game with great fluidity and smoothness," Launiere said. "She plays the game high and has tremendous potential with her size and length to have a great impact from the left side. We're happy that she wanted to come West and continue her volleyball career in the PAC-12. She plays with great confidence, and we look forward to working with her daily to continue her development. She has great potential."
Â
Tindsley is a middle blocker from Tracy, California. She lettered two years at Merril F. West High School and played for the Pacific Coast Volleyball Club. For her career, she finished with 710 kills hitting .374, 137 blocks and 44 aces. Tindsley was named the Stockton Record Volleyball Player of the Year. She was also on the track and field team in high school.
Â
"We're so happy Shkhinah chose Utah for her college career," Launiere said. "She is an exciting middle blocker with great size, athleticism and has tremendous length that allows her to play the game high above the net, as well as nice speed to block laterally from pin to pin. We believe Shkhinah has a great future ahead of her, and we can't wait to start working with her."Â
Â
Weatherington is an outside hitter from Mint Hill, North Carolina and was named an Under Armour All-American Nominee after totaling 1,320 kills, 99 blocks and 875 digs in her high school career at Charlotte Country Day. While putting up those numbers, she was named All-State NCISSA four times. Weatherington was a team captain three times and helped lead her team to the 2018 State Championship. She is no stranger to volleyball as her mom is the head volleyball coach at UNC Charlotte. The North Carolina native plans to major in Pre Law at Utah. Weatherington played for Carolina Rogue in club.
Â
"We're so excited to have Zoe join our program," Launiere said. "She's is a quality person that will add great value to our program in so many ways. As a player, she has a high upside and the PAC-12 will be a great conference for her to develop and grow as a student-athlete. Zoe plays high and hits the ball hard and can play on both pins. She has been working hard to develop her all-around game."
Â
The three signees will enroll and be a part of Utah's team for the fall of 2019.
