Utah Soccer saw its season end as it did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament. However, it was an impressive campaign for the Utes
"I am proud of the team's character and effort this season," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We challenged them with a difficult schedule and we took some hard defeats. The players kept chopping wood and got it turned around through some tremendous adversity. People really stepped up when we needed it.
TEAM SUCCESS
"Finishing top four in the Pac-12 with historic wins over ASU, Cal and Colorado is a fantastic accomplishment. By the end of the season, we were an excellent team and a force to be dealt with. I know the players want to keep playing and it is an important lesson that we need to be consistent throughout the season."
- Utah shut out four Pac-12 opponents in a row earlier this season. This was the longest scoreless streak for a Ute defense since 2006
- The Utes notched some significant program firsts
- First win in Tempe. 2-0 at Arizona State
- First win in Boulder, 1-0 vs. No. 21 Colorado
- First win ever vs. Cal, 2-1 in Berkeley
- The win at CU was Utah's first true road win over a ranked opponent since 2007
- After being selected ninth in the Pac-12's preseason poll, the Utes finished fourth, its second-best finish since joining the conference in 2011
SENIOR IMPACT
"I want to thank our seniors for their vast contributions to the program. It was a small group of four people (
Max Flom,
Hailey Skolmoski,
Liberty Taylor,
Paola van der Veen) that had to lead a young team. They kept pushing their teammates and would not allow them to quit until we got it rolling. These young ladies had a big challenge thrown at them and they were up to the task. What a great legacy they leave!"
- Van der Veen scored seven times to pace the team and her three game-winners in Pac-12 play were the most of any player
- She will lead the Utes in goals (7) and points (16) after doing the same last season. Van der Veen becomes just the sixth Ute to accomplish that in consecutive years:
- Katie Taylor 2013-14
- Adele Letro 2005-07
- Amy Kofoed 1999-2001
- Staci Burt 1997-98
- Jacki Doman 1995-96
- Skolmoski scored the 11th game-winner of her career in a 1-0 win over Nevada. That also moved her into fifth place in Utah history with 26 career goals, matching Jacki Doman (1995-96). Despite moving to defense for the final seven games, she still finished second on the squad with four goals.
INDIVIDUAL STANDOUTS
- Carly Nelson was named the Goalkeeper of the Week after shutting out Washington and No. 7 Washington State. Nelson made nine saves in the win over the Huskies and then blanked the nationally ranked Cougars.
- The junior finished the season atop the Pac-12 charts with 92 saves after making 21 in the last two games, a tie with No. 2 USC and a win at No. 21 Colorado.
- With six shutouts in conference play, she also led the league in that category. Her eight shutouts overall were one away from the Utah single-season mark (Lindsay Luke, 9 in 2013)
- Ireland Dunn finished the season with 15 points, second most on the team. In Pac-12 play, she finished with six assists, second most in the conference.
- She is the first Utah player with at least five assists in conference play since Kelly Isleib (5) in 2008. Dunn also matched the record for total assists in a season since joining the Pac-12, seven, set by Avery Jenkins in 2014.
ODDS AND ENDS
- Utah started 18 different players this season and 13 contrasting lineups
- Utah's schedule featured eight NCAA Tournament teams including:
- No. 1 Stanford
- No. 2 UCLA
- No. 6 USC
- Washington State (No. 7 nationally at time of game)
- Kansas (No. 19 nationally at time of game)
- Big Ten champion Minnesota
- West Coast Conference champion BYU
- Big Sky champion Weber State (did not qualify)
- Arizona
- Since joining the Pac-12 in 2011, the Utes have had the two best finishes in conference play of any team to not be selected to the NCAA Tournament; this season and 2011, when they finished fifth
- This is the best finish for a Pac-12 team to miss the tournament since Oregon was the conference runner-up in 2006.
