Utah (6-6) opens Pac-12 play this week taking on the Arizona State Sun Devils (9-3) this Thursday, Jan. 3. Tip-off between the Utes and Sun Devils is set for 6 p.m. MT at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe.

The Utes will wrap-up road play this weekend taking on the Arizona Wildcats (9-4) on Saturday, Jan. 5. The Utes and Wildcats are scheduled to tip-off at 12 p.m. MT from the McKale Center on Saturday.

COVERING THE RUNNIN' UTES
Thursday and Saturday's contests will both air on the Utah Athletics Radio Network (ESPN 700 AM) with Bill Riley and
Jimmy Soto announcing. Thursday's game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks with Daron Sutton calling the action and Eddie House providing color commentary. Saturday's match-up will also be televised on the Pac-12 Networks with Roxy Bernstein calling play-by-play and former NBA All-Star Richard Jefferson serving as an analyst.

SCOUTING ARIZONA STATE
The Sun Devils, who were ranked No. 17 in last week's AP Poll, is coming off a 67-66 home loss to Princeton and rounded out non-conference play with a record of 9-3. Arizona State went 6-1 at home during non-conference play, picking up a win over then No. 1-ranked Kansas, but then falling to Princeton this past Saturday. ASU picked up a road win at Georgia, but had road losses to Nevada and Vanderbilt.

The Sun Devils are led by Luguentz Dort's 18.1 points per game and Zylan Cheatham's 10.1 rebounds per game. Remy Martin (12.2 ppg), Kimani Lawrence (11.9) and Cheatham (11.3) all register double-digit scoring averages heading into Pac-12 play. Cheatham's 7.75 defensive rebounds per game average ranks first in the league and No. 13 in the nation heading into this week. As a team, ASU pulls down 44.0 rebounds per game, which ranks first in the Pac-12 and No. 5 overall in the nation.

ASU is one of the league and nation's best at getting to the free throw line, ranking No. 18 in the nation in attempts (342) and No. 24 in the nation in makes (234), but their .684 free throw shooting percentage ranks No. 221 overall and ninth in the Pac-12. Rob Edwards is the team's best free throw shooter, having knocked down .929 overall, but he has just 14 free throw attempts on the season.

UTAH vs. ARIZONA STATE SERIES HISTORY
Utah and Arizona State will meet for the 55th time, with Utah leading the series 33-21. The Utes and Sun Devils split last season's two meetings with the visiting team taking both games. Utah defeated then No. 21-rankd ASU, 80-77, in overtime back on Jan. 25 of last season.

Utah is 12-13 all-time when facing the Sun Devils in Tempe, which includes having won three straight and the last loss at Wells Fargo Arena coming back on Jan. 2, 2013 (54-55, OT).

SCOUTING ARIZONA
Arizona is coming off back-to-back wins over Montana (61-42) and UC Davis (70-68), ending non-conference play with a 9-4 record overall. The Wildcats went 7-1 at home with its only loss coming to Baylor (58-49) back on Dec. 15.

Brandon Randolph leads a quartet of players averaging double digits, with a 16.6 points per game average. He is followed by Chase Jeter (12.9 ppg), Brandon Williams (11.0) and Justin Coleman (10.1). Jeter leads the team on the boards with 7.0 rebounds per game and he has also tallied a team-best 10 blocked shots on the year.

Arizona is giving up .423 shooting percentage to opposing teams on the year, but just .283 percent of that is made from three-point range, which ranks among the top-25 in the nation. The Wildcats, offensively, average .450 from the field, .326 from beyond the arc, and rank No. 66 in the nation with a .735 free throw shooting percentage.

UTAH vs. ARIZONA SERIES HISTORY
Arizona leads the all-time series 33-29, which includes a 12-1 record against the Utes since Utah joined the Pac-12. Utah's lone defeat over Arizona as a member of the Pac-12 came back on Feb. 27, 2016, in Salt Lake City (70-64). Utah has dropped three straight since that win, but the last time the two teams met, Arizona escaped the McKale Center with just a one-point victory, 74-73.

LAST TIME OUT
The Utes fell for the time at the Huntsman Center this season with an 86-71 defeat to No. 6-ranked Nevada this past Saturday. Utah moved to 5-1 at home on the year, snapping an eight-game home winning streak overall and a 14 game winning streak at home over non-conference opponents.

Sedrick Barefield led the way with a season-high 33 points off the bench and sophomore
Donnie Tillman registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Wolf Pack's Caleb Martin scored a career-high 33 points and guided Nevada to win via the three-point line. Martin was 6-of-16 from deep, while Jazz Johnson was a perfect 4-of-4. The Wolf Pack drained 12 three-pointers on the day, while Utah managed just nine three-pointers at the other end of the floor.

Utah out-rebounded the Wolf Pack, 39-30, and tallied 15 points to 13 points in second-chance butckets, but the Utes tallied 18 turnovers, which led to 20 points for Nevada. The Wolf Pack limited themselves to just six turnovers in the game.

BAREFIELD OFF THE BENCH
Senior
Sedrick Barefield started the first nine games of the season, but has been Utah's main contributor while coming off the bench over the previous three contests. In his three games off the bench, the senior guard is averaging 21.3 points per game and is shooting .588 from the field overall, which includes a .591 effort from downtown. In the nine games he started, Barefield averaged 12.9 points, shot .352 from the field and .327 from downtown.

The Utes open Pac-12 play this week and enter conference play with an all-time mark of 65-61 since becoming a member in 2011-12. The Utes have gone 11-7 in Pac-12 play the previous two seasons and have finished among the league's top four teams the last four years.

Utah is 3-4 in Pac-12 openers, which includes a 1-3 record when opening league play on the road. The Utes won its Pac-12 opener last season, downing Oregon, 66-56, in Eugene. This will mark just the second time that Utah has opened Pac-12 play in Tempe, having fell to the Sun Devils the first time around back in 2013. Utah dropped the game 55-54 in overtime.

Utah will be back home next week to host both Washington schools. The Utes will take on the Washington Huskies next Thursday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m. and will close out the week taking on the Washington State Cougars on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m.
