SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah head volleyball coach
Beth Launiere has announced the hiring of Dan Corotan as the new assistant volleyball coach. Corotan will assume assistant coaching duties for the Utes immediately.
"After a comprehensive search, it became apparent to me that Dan has built a resume that checked off many of the boxes I was looking for in this position," Launiere said. "He is a hard worker that has continued to gain a vast amount of experience in a majority of areas in the sport of volleyball. He knows the game well and he will bring a tremendous amount of knowledge and passion to our gym.
"On top of everything that I believe Dan will bring to the Utah volleyball team, he is a remarkable individual that will fit well with the culture of our program. He is ready for this position in every aspect and I look forward to having him on my staff."
Corotan makes the move to Salt Lake City following a three-year stint at nearby Utah Valley, where he helped guide the Wolverines to a 45-44 overall record and 28-14 mark in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play. He was instrumental in UVU's taking second place in the WAC in 2016, which was the program's highest league-finish in school history.
In his first season with the Wolverines, Corotan coached UVU's first-ever WAC Freshman of the Year in Abby Jensen and then just a few seasons later helped guide Madison Dennison to 1.65 blocks per set, which ranked No. 2 overall in the nation. The Wolverines finished this past season ranked No. 8 in the nation in blocking, averaging 2.98 blocks per set. UVU ranked No. 7 in the nation in 2016 with 2.96 blocks per set.
In his time with UVU, Corotan was also responsible for creating recruiting content, plans and strategies. He managed film sessions on both an individual and team basis, while also breaking down statistical analysis on a daily basis. Prior to his being named assistant coach in 2015, Corotan served as the team's video and stats coordinator.
Corotan also has coaching experience at the club level having coached various boys and girls teams at the club level around Utah. He also coached a variety of camps and clinics, including Avid Volleyball and Global Medal Squared camps.
Corotan, who graduated from BYU in 2014 with a degree in Korean, hails from Los Alamitos, California, where he was a standout volleyball player at Los Alamitos High School. During his playing days, Corotan was named third-team All-Sunset League after leading his team to the Sunset League title. He also played for LBC at the club level, where he helped his squad take second at nationals en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Corotan also gained experience in the sport playing at the beach volleyball level for several years.
