RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Utah baseball team surrendered an early lead in a pitchers duel against UC Riverside before falling 2-1 on Friday, March 9. Nearly five shutout innings of relief by sophomore
Spencer Kevin Johnson highlighted the day for the Utes.
UC Riverside scored single runs in the second and third innings to take an early lead the Highlanders would not relinquish.
Kevin Johnson pitched 4 2/3 shutout innings in relief, allowing two hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Ute starter
Kyle Robeniol allowed two runs (one earned), six hits, four strikeouts and two walks over 3 1/3 innings pitched in the loss.
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., had two of Utah's five hits on the night, driving in the Utes lone run of the game.
Chandler Anderson,
Matt Richardson and Chris Rowan all had hits for Utah.
Both teams left runners on base in the first inning before UCR broke through for a run on three hits in the second inning. A leadoff home run in the third gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.
The Utes got on the board in the fifth inning, buoyed by a one-out single from Richardson.
Oliver Dunn walked to put two runners on base and Keirsey's RBI single send in the first run of the game for the Utes, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Utah struggled to get anything going offensively the remainder of the game, with a walk to Dunn the only baserunner in the late innings.
Utah and UC Riverside play game two of the series at noon PT, on Saturday, March 10.
