SALT LAKE CITY -Â Utah Soccer dropped its opener this evening in gut-wrenching fashion, allowing a goal with 11 seconds remaining in regulation and suffering a loss to Minnesota, 1-0.Â
Utah was the better team on the evening until a weather delay halted play in the 72nd minute. After a 45-minute break in action, the game got back underway with Minnesota the aggressor. The visitors recorded five of their 10 shots after the restart, including the winner from Patricia Ward. The freshman got on the end of a flicked free kick and was able to beat a Utah defender to the ball before firing home.
"We did some great things tonight and I was pleased overall with our effort and energy," head coach
Rich Manning said. "Clearly, after the weather delay we did not play with the focus we needed and we allowed Minnesota to grab the momentum. During the last 20 seconds, we lost concentration at a time when we know better. However, Minnesota is a very good team and we will learn from this."
In the opening moments of the contest,
Max Flom created a pair of chances and
Paola van der Veen had a great free-kick opportunity but neither player could find the back of the net.
The Utes had a flurry of opportunities in the waning stages of the half as
Hailey Stodden,
Hailey Skolmoski and
Makayla Christensen had close attempts blocked by Minnesota defenders.
Haylee Cacciacarne also went wide with a header off a corner kick and
Demi Lopez missed one over the bar during the closing seconds, as it remained scoreless.
In the second half,
Tavia Leachman and
Ireland Dunn had good looks at opening the scoring but could not divert their tries home. In the 65th minute, Van der Veen had an attempt blocked and Skolmoski had her rebound try parried away.
Carly Nelson made a pair of saves in the moments leading up to the weather delay and the junior made three more after the break before the Golden Gopher goal.
"We created some very good chances and had some positives with getting some players back from injury last year," Manning added. "It was good to have Demi,
Hailey Stodden, Makayla and
Brooklyn James get their first minutes in a Utah uniform. We will grow from this and we are excited to get back on the field at Weber State."
The Utes are back in action on Sunday evening. They travel up to Ogden for a game with the Wildcats at 8 p.m.
