PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Utah Runnin' Utes erased a six-point second half deficit and defeated the Stanford Cardinal on the road, 70-66, Thursday evening at Maples Pavilion. Utah moved to 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-12 Conference, while Stanford dropped to 9-10 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Utah would let a five-point first half lead get away as Stanford opened the second half with a 12-4 run. The Cardinal would later push its lead to 47-41 before a lay-up from
Charles Jones and a three-pointer from
Both Gach pulled the Utes back within a point. Stanford again got up by six, 54-48, but another bucket from Jones and back-to-back three-pointers from
Sedrick Barefield put Utah up 56-54.
Â
Stanford followed with a 4-0 run, but Utah got the lead back with a 7-2 run and never looked back on the way to winning at Maples Pavilion for the first time since 1971. The Utes snapped a six-game losing streak to Stanford in Palo Alto overall.
Â
Utah moved to 21-13 against Stanford all-time, while winning at Maples for just the third time in the history of the series. It marks the first win for Utah over a Stanford program at Maples Pavilion since the Utes joined the Pac-12 Conference.
