SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Runnin' Utes had its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday evening at the Huntsman Center, falling to the Oregon Ducks, 78-72. Utah dropped to 11-9 overall and 5-3 in the Pac-12 Conference, while Oregon moved to 13-8 on the season and 4-4 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Utah led by as many as 14 points, up 30-16 late in the first half, but Oregon would end the final 6:42 with a 22-4 run to take a 38-34 lead into halftime. The Utes would get back within a point, down 42-41, with a little more than 16 minutes to play in the second half, but the Ducks countered with a 13-3 run to push its lead back up to 11 points.
Utah would get key three-pointers from
Donnie Tillman and
Parker Van Dyke down the stretch, but Oregon would drain 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes and that proved to be too much en route to the road win.
Utah committed 17 turnovers in the game and Oregon managed to turn those miscues into a total of 29 points. The Utes shot 52 percent from the field in the first half and finished shooting 46 percent overall, but Oregon knocked down 53 percent of its shots in the second half on the way to a 47.5 shooting percentage in the game. Oregon went 17-of-21 from the free throw line overall and Utah was limited to just a 13-of-23 effort.
Sedrick Barefield and Tillman led the way for the Utes scoring 16 points each, while
Timmy Allen tallied 13 points and
Jayce Johnson chipped in with 11 points. Johnson pulled down a career-high 13 boards in the game.
Oregon's Will Richardson scored a game-high 19 points and Paul White added 14 points for the Ducks. Oregon tallied eight blocked shots and yielded just 10 turnovers on the evening.

POSTGAME QUOTES
Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak
On tonight's performance …
"I think that we all know the storyline of the game, there are just a lot of factors that go into being a good team. The first twelve minutes of the game were awesome, our defense was fantastic to start the game, Oregon didn't score and they didn't press either. Then, all of a sudden in the first-half, they scored nineteen points off of turnovers, which sucked a lot of life out of the building. After that, consequently our defense became bad because you can't defend turnovers and layups at the other end."
"I think that there are a lot of good things that this team is doing, defensively we were able to out-rebound them. You just can't give away twenty-nine points off of turnovers and then expect to win. We had a number of guys with two or three turnovers, and we have to figure that out. We practiced it all week, we knew what was coming. Those are the two things that I underlined on the board, were poise-versus-pressure and rebound the basketball. I said if we can do those two things, I believe that we can win, and unfortunately it didn't happen."
"We did drills this week with extra defenders to try and simulate their quickness, but my take on it, with our team, is that you have to go through the experience during the game to see what it is really going to be like. I thought we were going to be able to make some plays, but I give Oregon a lot of credit. They got their backs put up against the wall, we punched them in the mouth, and then they went into the full-court press and got back into the game. It stings, but that's the cliff notes of the ballgame in my mind."
Oregon head coach Dana Altman
Dana Altman on the balanced scoring effort tonight …
"I thought our ball movement for the most part was pretty good and you know Paul was steady and Will really took the ball to the basket. Payton hit the big free throws there at the end and we needed those desperately and Ehab gave us a big lift. You want your seniors to perform well and both of ours did tonight."
Dana Altman on how they can take this momentum into Colorado …
"Well it's important for us to get ready to go and get some rest before our next game. We will have a real light day tomorrow, we will go over their stuff and hopefully be ready at 7:30 mountain time on Saturday."
