ELDORA, Colo. – Addison Dvoracek began his Utah skiing career with a bang on Wednesday with a victory in the men's giant slalom RMISA alpine qualifier at Eldora Mountain Resort. The Ute men took two of the three podium positions in the race. For the women,
Eirin Linnea Engeset also debuted on the podium with a second-place finish.
The RMISA giant slalom qualifier does not count towards any team scoring and is used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season.
Dvoracek is in his first season at Utah after transferring from Montana State. He has three career collegiate race wins and seven career podium finishes. He had the fastest first run and the fourth-fastest second run in the win.
Mark Engel finished third in his return to the Utes after spending the last four years with the U.S. Ski Team and earned his fifth career podium finish. He jumped onto the podium with the fastest second run after standing 13
th after the first run. The Utes had three total skiers in the top 10 and would have been the top team if the race had been scored.
Huston Philp finished ninth for his sixth career top 10 finish behind a strong first run while
Joachim Bakken Lien had a strong second run to finish 10
th.
Ty Sprock placed 19
th for the men while four Utes did not finish.
Linus Walch was ninth after the first run and did not finish his second run.
Tomas Birkner de Miguel did not finish his first run while
Martin Grasic and
Dominic Demschar did not finish their second runs.
Engeset earned her first career collegiate podium in her inaugural college race for the women. Kaitlyn Vesterstein placed 18
th in her first college competition. Kathryn Parker did not finish her first run while
Julie Mohagen was disqualified on her second run.
The team competitions begin on Thursday, Jan. 10, with the giant slalom of the Colorado Invitational.
