Conley hits crossbar in defeat

LOS ANGELES – Utah Soccer suffered a 2-0 loss at No. 22 UCLA this afternoon

"I was really proud of the effort and energy," head coach Rich Manning said. "We played well defensively but we could not put them under pressure. We had two or three good looks but had trouble sustaining attacks. I was pleased with how hard we worked and played together."

Courtney Talbot forced an early save from UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah and Kaitlyn Conley hit the cross bar on the half hour. Unfortunately, the Bruins countered from that attempt and Mia Fishel converted the opener.

Ali Schinko had a look at goal to close the first half and Alexis Rushlow opened the second stanza with a try. Despite the efforts, Fishel scored again to double UCLA's lead.

"The beginning of the second half, where they scored the second goal, was disappointing," Manning added. "They speed you up and in those circumstances, you tend to give the ball away too quickly.

Utah settled into the game despite trailing by a pair as Ireland Dunn and Kristin Fairbairn called Micah to action.

"I felt as the game went on, Kylee Geis and Courtney performed really well and were composed on the ball," Manning said. "Tavia Leachman, Aleea Gwerder, Haylee Cacciacarne and Carly Nelson played well again – they tackled confidently and stayed calm despite being under pressure a lot of the day."

Nelson finished the match with a season-high seven saves.

The Utes are back home on Friday night for a match with No. 25 Arizona. It will be Utah's Power of Pink match and kicks off at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks
