BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 18 Utah battled all night against No. 15 Cal in Haas Pavilion, but the Bears edged out the Utes in a tight five sets (26-28, 25-15, 15-25, 25-21, 6-15) in a battle for first place in the Pac-12.

Dani Drews kept Utah in it all night finishing the match with 25 kills hitting .306, 12 digs and five service aces. The junior outside hitter reached a career milestone in the match as she got her 1,000
th career kill with her 24
th kill of the night. She is the 17
th player in program history to reach 1,000-career kills.

In a match with two highly ranked teams, both came out ready to play in a very even first set. Utah started the match hot as
Megan Yett got two service aces in the first three points and Drews was simply on fire. She finished the opening frame with nine kills hitting .444.

Utah held a two-point lead as late as 22-20, but the Bears won the next two points and then got a set point at 24-23. The Utes held off the point with a Drews kill and she went on to have two more kills in extra points with one giving Utah a set point. The home team held strong though, fighting back to take the first set 28-26.

Finding themselves in a hole on the road, Utah jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the second. Cal came back to tie it up and even took a lead after a 10-2 run of their own, but the Utes weren't done. Trailing 15-14 with
Brianna Doehrmann serving, Utah responded and went on an 11-0 run to close things out 25-15 and to tie the match up at one set apiece.

In the beginning of the third things were back and forth, but Cal used a big run in the middle of the set to give them the advantage in the set and eventually the match to go up 2-1.

With all the momentum, Cal earned the advantage in the fourth set too building an 18-11 lead and looking to close things out. Drews stepped up to serve and sparked the Utes going on a 4-0 run to get within three.
Kinga Windisch stepped up to serve next for Utah and she led Utah all the way back on a 7-0 run including three aces. Cal tried to stop the run, but the Utes pushed things to a fifth set.

Utah couldn't roll the momentum over to the fifth as Cal took a lead and then shut the door on another comeback.

Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres finished the match with 52 assists and six digs.
Berkeley Oblad was the other Ute with double-figure kills with 12 hitting .308 on the night.

Doehrmann led the team with 20 digs.

Utah will finish off its trip to the Bay with a match against Stanford on Sunday, October 20 at 3 p.m. MT.
