CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Utah men's basketball team was handed its first loss of the season after falling to a hot-shooting Coastal Carolina team Thursday night in its opening game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational 79-57 inside the HTC Center.
The first media timeout didn't see much action from either team with both squads combining to go 4-of-11 from the field with five turnovers.
Later out of the under-12 media break, Coastal Carolina went on a 7-0 run and pushed its lead thanks to a 2:35 scoring drought by Utah (3-1) and saw it trail CCU 19-10.
Branden Carlson finally put an end to that dry spell when he converted on a hook shot on the far short corner with 9:43 remaining in the first half.
After going down 23-16 at the 7:37 media break, a 9-2 run ensued for the Utes and was capped off by a great baseline cut from
Timmy Allen on a pass from Carlson to bring Utah within 27-25 of the Chanticleers (3-2).
A 3-pointer from
Alfonso Plummer followed by a pair of free-throws from Allen brought the Utes within 33-30, but a couple offensive rebounds by CCU at the end of regulation saw Keishawn Brewton get a baseline three off before the buzzer to put Utah behind 36-30 at the half.
Despite exchanging baskets with Coastal Carolina to open the second stanza, a quick 5-0 spurt for the Chanticleers was not what head coach
Larry Krystkowiak wanted to see and called a timeout 2:34 minutes into the frame down 44-34.
Coastal Carolina then jumped out to a quick 14-2 run thanks to some hot-shooting from beyond the arc. Four of the Chanticleer's five field-goals during that 4:18 minutes span came from 3-point range put the Utes behind 58-40.
Utah's bench did its best to cut into the CCU lead but a big night from beyond the arc for the Chanticleers saw them hand Utah its first loss of the season.
Allen led the Utes with 15 points and nine rebounds while 11 other Utes saw themselves in the scoring column. As a team, Utah struggled both beyond the arc and at the free-throw line shooting just 17.9-percent down range and 56-percent from the line.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Utes were held under the 40-percent shooting mark for the first time this season, finishing with a .350 shooting clip … Utah gave up 15 turnovers to CCU's 11 and was edged 19-9 in the points of turnovers category … the biggest difference in tonight's game was 3-point shooting, Coastal Carolina had 18 more points from beyond the arc at the end of the night in a 22-point game.

Opening Statement…
"It was kind of variety of things. In the first half I thought we earned some pretty good shots, they didn't go in. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that, you've got to make open shots. We got outscrapped. In the first half, a number of offensive rebounds, the play right before halftime was pretty illuminating in my mind where the ball's bouncing around, we don't get the possession, they hit a 3, go up six. It's a big difference. You've got to play hard, smart and together to win most games and we didn't play hard enough in the first and then we didn't play smart enough or together enough in the second half."
On the team's experience…
"That's going to be a common question all year long. The only way you get experience is time. The only way you heal when you're mourning over somebody's death is time. You can't speed it up, you've got to live it and you go through and you talk and your team hopefully grows if they're made of the right stuff."
UP NEXT
