SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 17 Utah volleyball team is headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year and the 16
th time overall to face the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday, December 6 at 4 p.m. MT.
This is the second season in a row and third time in four years the team has traveled to Provo for the first and second round.
Utah finished the regular season 22-9 overall and 14-6 in the Pac-12 to finish in third. The 14 wins and third place finish are program bests for the Utes since joining the conference in 2011. The Utes are winners of three in a row headed into the tournament.
Illinois finished the season 16-13 overall and 11-9 in the Big Ten. Utah and Illinois have squared off five times before and the Utes are 1-4 overall, but the two teams haven't played since 2002.
Head Coach
Beth Launiere has some ties with Illinois as she got her masters degree in Sport Administration from Illinois and then served as an assistant coach at Illinois (1988-89) prior to coming to Utah. The Illini went 57-12 during Launiere's stay and made it to two NCAA Tournaments, including a 1988 Final Four showing.
If Utah beats Illinois, they'll play the winner of BYU and New Mexico State on Saturday, December 7 at 7 p.m. in Provo.
