SALT LAKE CITY – The AVCA has announced its All-Region teams and Utah volleyball has four named to the All-Region team as well as
Dani Drews being named Region Player of the Year and head coach
Beth Launiere being named Region Coach of the Year.
Along with Drews earning her first Region Player of the Year award, she made the All-Region team for the second straight season. Joining her on the team is
Kenzie Koerber,
Berkeley Oblad and
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres.
Drews becomes the second AVCA Region Player of the Year in program history while being the first player in program history to have over 600 kills. In Pac-12 play, Drews was third overall averaging 4.76 kills per set. She has had 15 matches with over 20 kills and two matches with over 30. Against USC, she set a rally-scoring program record with 33 kills while also hitting .348 in the match. Drews also leads the team in aces with 34. Never coming off the floor, Drews has 274 digs and 70.0 blocks.
Koerber has been a force on the right side all season. After she earned her first All-Pac-12 team honor, she has now earned her first Pacific South All-Region team honor after being named honorable mention last season. Koerber was honored twice this season with Pac-12 Weekly awards winning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week. The junior right side started the season strong by being named the Utah Volleyball Classic MVP after helping Utah go 3-0 in the opening weekend beating two ranked teams in Kentucky and Cal Poly. Along with her strong offensive numbers, Koerber has been great on defense as well being third on the team with 105 blocks and second on the team with 307 digs.
In her first season starting, Ka'aha'aina-Torres had some of the best numbers in the Pac-12 having 1,472 assists through the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament averaging 11.41 assists per set. That mark is the 17
th best mark in the NCAA. She has had 10 matches with at least 50 assists and two matches with 67 assists. That's the most assists a Utah setter has had since 2010 and Ka'aha'aina-Torres did it twice. Utah finished third in the Pac-12 in hitting percentage in conference play and hit over .300 seven times this season. This is her first All-Region award.
Redshirt senior
Berkeley Oblad earned her first Pacific South All-Region honor after being named honorable mention in 2017. Back for her redshirt senior season, she made it count totaling a career high with 326 kills while also being a force at the net with 155.0 blocks. Oblad became the fourth player in Utah program history to have 1,000 career kills and 500 career blocks.
With as much success as these four have had on the court as well as the rest of the team, Launiere has earned her fourth Pacific South Region Coach of the Year award (2001, 2006, 2008, 2019) in her 30
th season as head coach. Last week, she was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year and has guided her team to her fourth Sweet 16 in Program history.
The team will play Stanford this Friday, December 13 at 8 p.m. PT (9 p.m. MT) on ESPNU.
