SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah volleyball team has had four student-athletes named an AVCA All-American led by
Dani Drews being tabbed a First Team All-American.
Along with Drews,
Kenzie Koerber and
Berkeley Oblad have been named AVCA Second Team All-Americans, and
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres has been named AVCA All-American honorable mention.
The four being honored is the most in one season in program history. Before this season, Utah had three student-athletes named to the second team and one named to the first team.
After being named a Second Team All-American after the 2018 season, Drews raised the bar in 2019 becoming the second player in program history to be named an AVCA First Team All-American.
"We couldn't be more proud of Dani, Kenzie, Berkeley and Saige," head coach
Beth Launiere said. "
Dani Drews becoming a two-time All-American and garnering first-team honors this year is an amazing honor for her and our program. Dani worked hard this past year to improve every aspect of her game and has become one of the top all-around players in the country."
She had a historic season setting a new single-season record in kills with 643 and was named the Pacific South Region Player of the Year. In Pac-12 play, Drews was third overall averaging 4.76 kills per set. She has had 15 matches with over 20 kills and two matches with over 30. Against USC, she set a rally-scoring program record with 33 kills while also hitting .348 in the match. Drews also leads the team in aces with 34. Never coming off the floor, Drews has 278 digs and 72.0 blocks. She was also named to the All-Pac-12 Team.
"I am so pleased
Kenzie Koerber and
Berkeley Oblad were recognized as All-Americans," Launiere said. "Kenzie carried a huge load for us both offensively and defensively, highlighted by being one of the top blockers in her position in the country. Berkeley came back for her fifth year determined to lead our team to something never done before by our program, which she did as we had so many "firsts" this year. She was a fearless leader that played with inspiring passion all season."
Koerber earned Second Team All-American honors after being a force on the right side all season. She was the only Pac-12 student-athlete to earn Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors. The junior right side started the season strong by being named the Utah Volleyball Classic MVP after helping Utah go 3-0 in the opening weekend beating two ranked teams in Kentucky and Cal Poly. Along with her strong offensive numbers, Koerber has been great on defense as well being third on the team with 109 blocks and second on the team with 323 digs. She was named All-American honorable mention last season.
Oblad came back for a fifth season after sitting out the majority of the 2018 season with an elbow injury and made it count being named a Second Team All-American. She totaled a career high with 338 kills hitting .317 while also being a force at the net with 159.0 blocks. Oblad became the fourth player in Utah program history to have 1,000 career kills and 500 career blocks. After her 2017 season, Oblad was named All-American honorable mention.
"
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres being named honorable mention All-American is a tribute to her work ethic, focus and determination over the past year," Launiere said. "We are so excited and her future is bright, being just a sophomore."
In her first season starting, Ka'aha'aina-Torres has been named All-American honorable mention. She set a Utah single-season record with 1,518 assists. Ka'aha'aina-Torres had 10 matches with at least 50 assists and two matches with 67 assists. That's the most assists a Utah setter has had since 2010 and Ka'aha'aina-Torres did it twice.
These four being honored as All-Americans adds to a tremendous season for Utah volleyball that saw them finish the season 24-10. They had a 14-6 record in the Pac-12 finishing in third. The 14 wins and third place finish were the most since they've joined the conference in 2011.
Drews, Koerber and Oblad will be honored at the Final Four in Pittsburgh at a banquet this Friday.
