PROVO – The Utah volleyball team clinched a trip to their fourth Sweet 16 in program history with a resounding sweep over BYU (25-15, 25-15, 25-15) in Smith Fieldhouse in Provo.
Â
It is the first sweep BYU has suffered on their home court since early 2011, and it also completed a weekend of beating two of the final four teams from the 2018 season in Illinois and BYU.
"We played a very complete match tonight and couldn't be more proud of this team," head coach
Beth Launiere said. "We have had big goals all season and so far this is another one of them. I just thought we came out ready to go and never looked back. For a team that's played a lot of five setters, that was for sure the most complete match we've played. We were just on the offense all night, played aggressively and kept our errors down. Congrats to BYU on a good season, and we're really pleased to be moving on."
Â
In a complete team effort,
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres led the way with 38 assists as the team hit .394 for the match. She also had 10 digs, 5.0 blocks and four kills.
Â
Dani Drews was sensational on the offensive end finishing with 17 kills hitting .457 with only one error.
Kenzie Koerber was the other Ute with double-figure kills having 11 on the night hitting .400 with eight digs and 5.0 blocks.
Â
Megan Yett set the tone immediately, starting the match with an ace and then led the team to a 3-0 lead. Utah didn't slow down quickly going on a 5-0 run to grab a 9-2 lead. Utah's defense didn't allow BYU to get back in the set as they finished the opener with 5.0 blocks holding BYU to a .097 hitting percentage. On the flip side, Utah's offense hit .433 with the offense being spread around as five different players had at least two kills. The Utes closed the opening frame in dominating fashion at 25-15.
Â
Once Utah got rolling, they never let up winning all three sets 25-15. The second set was a little tighter, but the Utes were relentless and stretched their lead to 20-12 putting it out of reach and going up 2-0.
Â
With the chance to sweep BYU at home, Utah hit .452 in the third set getting up 9-2 immediately and never letting BYU back in it. They held BYU to just an .067 hitting percentage to shut the door emphatically on BYU's season.
Â
The team's block came up big all night as they finished the night with 12.0 of them and had four players with at least 5.0 blocks.
Phoebe Grace led the way with 7.0 on the night.
Â
In all, the team totaled 49 kills to only 10 errors and limited BYU to 28 kills and 18 errors.
"This has been a full season of getting better and growing and playing in some really big matches," Launiere said. "We've gone on the road and won some big matches and at least been in some big matches. This is a culmination of a lot of growth, determination and improvement."
Â
Utah will now play Pac-12 foe Stanford in the Sweet 16 in Palo Alto, but is still waiting to find out when they will play.
