UTAH vs. ARIZONA SERIES HISTORY
Arizona won the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, downing the Utes 84-81 in overtime back on Jan. 5, in Tempe. It marked four straight losses to Arizona, with Utah's last win coming back on Feb. 27, 2016 - a 70-64 victory over the Wildcats in Salt Lake City. The win is Utah's only win over Arizona since the Utes joined the Pac-12 in 2011-12. Arizona leads the all-time series, 34-29, which includes a 13-1 mark over the Utes since the inagural Pac-12 Conference season. Utah, however, is 20-11 when facing the Wildcats in Salt Lake City.
LAST TIME OUT
Utah rebounded from a 22-point deficit to come all the way back and defeat the UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion this past Saturday. With 12:10 left to play in the second half, Utah trailed 69-47, but Utah countered with a 5-0 run and eventually outscored the Bruins 46-23 the rest of the way. Down 92-90 with 5.9 seconds left on the clock,
Sedrick Barefield brought the ball up the court, but after taking on a double-team, he would pass it back to
Parker Van Dyke, who would throw it up and knock down the game-winner as time expired.
It marked Utah's first buzzer-beating victory since Feb. 19, 2011, when Chris Hines banked in a three-pointer as time expired to defeat New Mexico, 62-60. Down 60-59 with 17 seconds left to play, UNM missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw and Utah pushed the ball up-court. The Utes lost control of the ball at the top of the key with the final seconds ticking off before Hines gained control and got off an off-balance shot that hit the glass and dropped through for the game winner.
DON'T CALL IT (ANOTHER) COMEBACK
Not to be outdone from its 17-point come-from-behind victory at Arizona State earlier this season, Utah would come all the way back from 22 points down at UCLA on Feb. 9, to register the school's largest comeback in the
Larry Krystkowiak era. Utah trailed 69-47 with 12:10 left to play in the second half, but managed to outscore the Bruins 46-23 down the stretch and
Parker Van Dyke would knock down the game-winner with a three-pointer as time expired to give Utah a 93-92 victory.
The 22-point come-from-behind win is now the largest comeback under Krystkowiak, after the Utes previously set that mark earlier this season when they trailed the Sun Devils by 17 points on the road back on Jan. 3. Down 28-11 with 9:40 left to play in the first half, Utah came all the way back to defeat the Sun Devils 96-86 in Tempe.
Prior to the ASU win, Utah's largest deficit overcome in the Krystkowiak era was when the Utes were 15 points down against Idaho State back on Dec. 10, 2013. Trailing 35-20 with 3:27 to play in first half of that contest, the Utes would come all the way back to win that game 74-66.
