SEATTLE – The Utah Runnin' Utes dropped a Pac-12 Conference road game, falling 62-45 to the Washington Huskies Wednesday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Utah dropped to 14-12 overall and 8-6 in league play, while Washington improved its position in the standings at 21-5 overall and 12-1 in the Pac-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Utah opened the evening with a three-pointer from
Sedrick Barefield, who had a quick 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown, but the senior would have to sit the final eight minutes of the first half after picking up a pair of fouls.
Utah would lead by as many as 10 points, up 17-7 with less than 13 minutes to play in the first period, but the Huskies would go on a 13-3 run and Matisse Thybulle would cap it off with a three-pointer at the 6:09 mark to notch things up 20-20.
Riley Battin countered with a three at the other end to put Utah back up 23-20, but Washington would take a 26-25 lead with 2:18 left to play – the first lead for the Huskies in the game – and later closed out the period with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Dominic Green to take a 33-27 advantage into the locker room.
Heading into the second half, Utah's last field goal was a tip-in from Battin at the 4:38 mark of the first period. Utah was still without a field goal at the 15:12 mark of the second half, but
Parker Van Dyke ended Utah's scoreless drought with a pair of free throws. At the time though, UW had built its lead to double-digits. Utah opened the frame going 0-for-7 and was held nearly 16 minutes without a field goal until
Both Gach knocked down a three-pointer at the 8:49 mark.
Washington would lead by as many as 22 points, up 60-38 with 3:12 to play in the game, and Utah was limited to just five field goals in the frame. Utah did manage to score seven of the game's final nine points to close the gap less than 20 points.
Barefield was held scoreless in the second half and finished with a team-high 12 points, while
Jayce Johnson led the way on the boards with 12 rebounds.
UP NEXT
Utah will have a two-day break before hitting the court again and taking on the Washington Cougars this Saturday, Feb. 23, in Pullman, Wash. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. PT at Beasley Coliseum and the contest will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak
On the game in general …
"We could not hit free throws. We didn't finish around the rim. We had too many turnovers and that is what happens when you don't score points. But, that is that and that is why they lead the conference in field goal percentage defense. That zone is daunting and we didn't step up and make plays."
On the offense tonight …
"Well, like I said, turnovers. We had open looks and they didn't go in, but when we stand at the free throw line and those do not go in … you name it. It takes a lot of different facets. You try to address it all week and figure out how you are going to score on them, but then at the same time, you have to guard them. A lot of credit goes to Washington."
