Sims, Crofts Highlight Day 2 for Utes at Aztec Invitational

Sims wins heptathlon; Crofts registers new PR in javelin

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Utah's Kolbi Sims took home first place in the women's heptathlon to highlight Utah's day at the 41st Annual Aztec Invitational on Friday.

"What an excellent day for us today," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "That was a great win for Kolbi. We had several personal records set in the 400 and ran solidly in the 200. It was another day of big improvement for us and we will be looking for more of the same tomorrow."

Sims, who began the day in second place in the heptathlon after four events, would finish the event with 5,189 points to take first overall, while also registering the fourth-best score in school history. It is the highest heptathlon score for a Utah athlete since Brianna LeRoy totaled the third-highest score in school history with 5,221 points back on May 16, 2012.

Sims finished sixth overall in the long jump with a mark of 5.54m (18' 2.25"), but then took fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 37.16m (121' 11"). Heading into the final event, Sims was just a few points back in second place, but finished second in the 800m run with a time of 2:19.22 to finish with a first-place total of 5,189 points.

In other action of Friday, Jackie Martin would take third in the 400m with a new personal-best time of 55.86. She was followed by Brooklyn James who finished in fourth with a time of 56.57. Maya LeBar was right behind in sixth place with a time of 56.72.

Mesa Weidle notched a top-five finish in the 800m run, taking fourth place with a new personal-best time of 2:16.62.

Skyler Blair, Brooke Martin and Ruby Jane Mathewson finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400m hurdles event. Blair crossed the finish line with a time of 1:04.72, while Martin notched a time of 1:04.78. Mathewson tallied a time of 1:05.73.

Taylor Watson took seventh in the 200m run, posting a time of 24.87 and J. Martin followed right behind her in eighth with a time of 24.94.

Regan Crofts rounded out Utah's day taking second place in the women's javelin, registering a new personal-best mark of 42.75m (140' 3"), which also moves her into fifth on the school's all-time performance list.

Utah will wrap-up its three-day fling in Southern California with the final day of action set for tomorrow (Saturday). Action will get underway with field events beginning at 9 a.m. PT and the first running event taking place at 9:30 a.m. PT at Aztrack Sports Deck.
