LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Despite making a late rally, Utah baseball dropped the final game of the series 6-4 against No. 1 UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Six different Utes had one hit to score the team's four runs.
Trailing 3-0, Utah's offense got going in the fifth inning scoring two runs on two hits. After
Matt Richardson drew a walk,
Oliver Dunn hit a double to left center to score Richardson from first. UCLA made a pitcher change, but it didn't matter to
Rykker Tom as he knocked in Dunn from second with a single to bring the Utes within one.
After the Bruins scored one run in the fifth and the sixth, Utah found themselves in a three-run hole again needing a rally. That rally came in the top of the eighth as the first five batters reached base with walks and hits. In all, Utah scored two more runs on two hits to once again draw within one.
Zack Moeller got the first RBI in the top of the eighth after a fielder's choice allowed
Erick Migueles to score from third. After
Dominic Foscalina drew a walk to load the bases with one out,
Chandler Anderson hit a sac fly to score Moeller to bring the Utes back within one.
Utah had two pitchers on the mound against UCLA.
Dustyn Schramm got the start and
Zac McCleve came on in relief. Schramm pitched 4.2 innings giving up four runs on seven hits, and McCleve closed out the final 3.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits with only one of those runs being earned.
Utah will head home and host the Cal Bears next weekend beginning Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m. at Smith's Ballpark.
