ON DECK
Utah plays its final series of the season this weekend at Oregon State. Utah has dropped the last two series against the Beavers after winning three in a row.
Utah currently ranks 11th in the nation in terms of schedule strength and has been among the top 20 nationally the last four seasons. The Utes have played four of the top five teams in the nation since March 31 (11 games total).Â
BARRERA BREAKING OUT FOR UTES
Alyssa Barrera leads the Pac-12 and sits fourth nationally with seven triples, which matches the single-season record also held by current head coach Amy Hogue.
Barrera also ranks fifth in the Pac-12 with a .429 average and eighth in hits (24) and OBP (.492). She also paces Utah with 17 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games.
Defensively, she has registered 26 putouts and also leads the Pac-12 with four outfield assists. She has started all 154 games of her Utah career and against BYU, scored her 100th run.Â
DYNAMITE DICKMAN
Dickman leads Utah with eight home runs and a .625 slugging percentage, which ranks among the top 20 in the Pac-12.
She also owns the longest hitting streak (10 games) and on-base streak (12 games) for the Utes this season and is currently the toughest at-bat in the Pac-12 with just seven strikeouts in 136 at bats.
The senior was recently awarded the Wellness Advocate Award from the athletic department for demonstrating commitment to improvement in personal wellness and courage in advocating the importance of mental health awareness among their fellow student-athletes.
BONSTROM BREAKTHROUGH
In Pac-12 play, Ellessa Bonstrom leads all freshmen with four homers. She ranks second in runs scored and walks, third in RBI, fourth in slugging and ninth in OBP.
She is also excelling defensively, ranking second among all fielders in assists in conference play with 53.Â
WEEKLY RECAP
Utah won a series against Oregon for the first time by taking two of three from the Ducks and also captured the Deseret First Duel vs. BYU for the first time since 2014.
Three Utes dominated the stat sheets, Alyssa Barrera, BreOnna Castaneda and Ally Dickman. Dickman hit .588 with a homer and seven RBI, Castaneda batted .571 with three doubles and a pair of game-ending hits and Barrera slugged .533 with six runs scored.
A pair of seniors also enjoyed their final weekend at home. Ryley Ball hit .364 in three games with a pair of runs scored. Hailey Hilburn hit .308 and came home three times.
Freshman Sydney Sandez also racked up three wins in the circle, two in relief, and picked up 11 strikeouts, including a season-high five in the middle game vs. the Ducks.Â
DYNAMIC DUO TURNING TWO
Utah has turned 25 double plays, the most in the Pac-12 and 22nd nationally. The Utes turned three in a game vs. Ohio State earlier this year.
Julia Noskin and BreOnna Castaneda have combined for 223 assists, 44 more than second best in the conference (Inouye/Young, STAN). In league play, Noskin and Ellessa Bonstrom have 110 assists, 32 more than the next best duo (Bates/Atlee, UW).Â
SANDEZ STARTING CAREER
Newcomer Sydney Sandez's 37 appearances are second most in the Pac-12 and also 10th in innings pitched at 123 1/3 frames, most among conference freshmen.
Sandez has also won five of Utah's six Pac-12 games this season with a pair of victories over Cal and Oregon, as well as out-dueling Gabby Plain and No. 3 Washington
