ALT LAKE CITY – Freshman
Courtney Talbot scored a late equalizer as Red earned a 2-2 draw with White in the annual intrasquad scrimmage for Utah Soccer.
"This was a good experience for everyone because we got to play for close to 90 minutes and work at a game speed," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We had a chance to look at people that are competing for playing time and starting spots.
We have been fortunate this preseason because the players came back fit for camp. Their hard work has paid off because you can see that we have stayed healthy and that helps with the overall depth of the team. Now we have to find the people who are ready to step up into those spots."
As for the game itself, sophomore
Anna Escobedo hit the crossbar twice before setting up the first goal. She passed off to newcomer
Anna Pickering who hit a swerving ball to the upper left corner as Red took an early lead.
"I have just been trying to improve and show the coaches I am ready to play," Pickering said. "Our goal was to play as a team and work hard together."
White pulled even before halftime as
Kristin Fairbairn found
Ali Schinko near the byline. The German product rifled a ball into the far corner from an acute angle for the equalizer.
"I think we are coming together on the field and just getting out and running around was good for us," Fairbairn added.
White turned the game around in the second half as
Hailey Stodden played a ball down the win for
Makayla Christensen. The sophomore finished a try low to the far corner of the goal to put her side in front
"I saw Makayla cutting across and getting ready to break so I knew I had to hit her before she broke so everything was on time," Stodden stated.
Talbot got the final goal, receiving the ball off an interception by
Sidney Roberts.
"I think this capped a good preseason," Talbot said. "Things have been going well and playing soccer today in a game atmosphere was a lot of fun. It was competitive right from the warmups."
