SALT LAKE CITY – The Utes have a mainstay at libero in
Brianna Doehrmann back for her senior season to lead three other defensive specialists on the roster.
With three years of starting experience coming into the season, Doehrmann became the 11
th player to surpass the 1,000-dig mark in program history during the 2018 season. She enjoyed a career year finishing with 487 digs averaging 3.87 per set.
The senior comes into this season having played in 93 career matches and 352 sets.
Behind her is
Alexa Van Komen and then two newcomers
Sarah Stephens and
Naya Dong.
Van Komen is a redshirt sophomore that saw action in six matches last season. Mainly coming in for serves, she had eight digs.
Stephens is a newcomer on the team, but not new to the program. She served as one of the team's managers last season and after playing some in the spring, got invited to join the team. Stephens is local and went to Skyline High School and was a big Utah fan growing up. In high school, she had 436 digs her senior season averaging 5.0 digs per set.
Dong is from 'Iolani School in Hawaii, which Utah fans are familiar with as setter
Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres also went there. She made the Interscholastic League of Honolulu – first-team all-star selection in 2017 and 2018 after winning two state championships.
The Utes are getting closer and closer to their 2019 season. They open up at home hosting Saint Mary's, No. 7 Kentucky and No. 23 Cal Poly in the Utah Volleyball Classic on August 30-31.
