FIRST SERVE
Utah opens up the 2019 season by hosting three 2018 NCAA Tournament teams in Saint Mary's, No. 7 Kentucky and No. 23 Cal Poly.
This is the second year in a row that Saint Mary's will play in the Utah Volleyball Classic and earned a five-set win over the Utes last season.
No. 7 Kentucky is coming off a tremendous season where they went 26-5 and a perfect 18-0 in SEC play. The Wildcats made it to the Sweet 16 before falling to Nebraska.
No. 23 Cal Poly also had a great 2018 season going 25-3 before losing in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament to San Diego.
SERIES HISTORY
The Utes have played against all three teams before going 3-1 against Saint Mary's, 0-1 against Kentucky and 5-11 against Cal Poly.
Utah and Saint Mary's squared off last year and the Gaels pulled off the upset winning in five sets.
The Utes and Wildcats played once before in Lexington, Kentucky back in 2017 and Kentucky edged out Utah in five thrilling sets in the first tournament of the year.
Overall, Utah is 5-11 against Cal Poly, but the Utes have won the last five matches against the Mustangs.
TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The Utes return a lot from last season and are being challenged with a really tough non-conference schedule that includes five matches against ranked opponents.
Two of them are coming in the first weekend at home against No. 7 Kentucky and No. 23 Cal Poly. Two weeks later, the Utes will finish their non-conference schedule with No. 12 Pittsburgh and No. 23 Cal Poly again. They will also face Pepperdine, who is receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll like the Utes.
To finish off their non-conference schedule, Utah will host No. 9 BYU.
Including Pac-12 teams, Utah will play seven of the top 14 teams in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
UTES PICKED TO FINISH FIFTH
Utah was picked to finish fifth in the Pac-12 by the coaches this preseason. Last year, Utah finished in a tie for sixth after closing the season winning five of six matches in the regular season.
Drews was also honored by being named to the Preseason Pac-12 All-Conference Team.
UP NEXT
Utah will stay in the state, but will hit the road for four matches over the next week. First, they will travel to Utah State for a Tuesday match.
Then, they will head to Utah Valley for the weekend to play the Wolverines as well as UC Davis and Portland State.
