SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
For the fifth time in six games, the Utah men's basketball team will play a team ranked or receiving votes in the AP Top-25 Poll when it heads to Tucson to play #RV/RV Arizona this Thursday, Jan. 16. Both teams will be eager to get back in the win column after both squads dropped their last two conference matches and sit at 1-2 in Pac-12 play. The Utes lost to then #4/6 Oregon at home before falling to #25/RV Colorado on the road while Arizona was swept this past weekend at the Oregon schools.
Â
Siting at 11-5 overall, the Wildcats return home to the McKale Center where they are 8-1 on the year. Their lone loss at home came at the hands of Gonzaga back in mid-December – who is now the top-ranked team in the nation for the second-straight week. Arizona opened the year on a tear, winning nine-straight games before losing three of its next four against Baylor, Gonzaga and St. John's.
Â
Zeke Nnaji leads a trio of true freshman in scoring for the Wildcats, checking in with a team best 16.5 points average and 8.5 rebounds per game to go with 17 blocks and a .662 shooting clip. Meanwhile, point guard Nico Mannion is second on the team averaging 14.3 points, 6.3 assists and 2.0 rebounds. Josh Green is scoring 13.0 points per game with 5.1 boards per game while also leading the team with 26 steals on the season. The .662 shooting clip for Nnaji ranks eighth in the country while Mannion's 6.3 assists average 100 total assists ranks 17th in the nation through games on Sunday, Jan. 12.
Â
Arizona has a trio of threats from beyond on the arc in Dylan Smith, who leads the team with 26 made triples, Mannion (25) and Jermal Baker Jr. (22). In addition, transfer Max Hazzard has hit 16 threes on the year along with 15 from Green.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Runnin' Utes did not perform the way they wanted to this past Sunday against then-No. 25/RV Colorado to start their three-game road swing, falling to the Buffalos 91-52 in the CU Events Center. The 39-point loss was the third largest defeat in league play since joining the Pac-12 in 2011-12.
Â
The Utes were held to just 35.2-percent shooting from the floor, their fourth lowest shooting percentage on the season and was out-rebounded 42-24. Utah was also outscored in the paint 46-26 while giving up 23 points on 13 turnovers. All 11 players that saw the floor were held to single digits with
